Most people have a disk partition dedicated to the Squid cache. You don't want to use the entire partition size. You have to leave some extra room. Currently, Squid is not very tolerant of running out of disk space. Lets say you have a 9GB disk. Remember that disk manufacturers lie about the space available. A so-called 9GB disk usually results in about 8.5GB of raw, usable space. First, put a filesystem on it, and mount it. Then check the ''available space'' with your df program.

The size of the cache is measured in Data Groups and can be configured by altering the definition of CACHE_MESSAGES in cacheops.c

With Squid-1.1, yes, you will lose your cache. This is because version 1.1 uses a simplistic algorithm to distribute files between cache directories. With Squid-2, you will not lose your existing cache. You can add and delete cache_dir's without affecting any of the others. Several people on both the fwtk-users and the squid-users mailing asked about using Squid in combination with http-gw from the TIS toolkit.

With Squid-1.1 it is NOT possible. Each cache_dir is assumed to be the same size. The cache_swap setting defines the size of all cache_dir's taken together. If you have N cache_dir's then each one will hold cache_swap ÷ N Megabytes.

DIRECTORY/SIZE doesn't take into account the size of file headers which are charged to your quota. The total cache size in the Nokia 7110 is 32.5 kilobytes. The number of entries depends on the size of each entry. The Max Cache Entry Size, i.e. the largest data size that can be cached is 1536 bytes. Data are kept in the cache according to the HTTP caching rules. If you use the dir command always with a lot of options like /O /W or whatever you want, it's nasty to type them all the time. You can solve this problem by setting the varibale DIRCMD in autoexec.bat: SET DIRCMD=/W The example above will set the parameter /W as default, you only type dir and you'll get the same result as dir /w. Note: This doesn't work for DR-DOS! In DR-DOS, you may set the default paramenter with dir /C [parameters], e.g. dir /CW

The WORK_DIR contains files that DenyHosts uses for keeping track of the hackers. In addition to these files that DenyHosts creates and updates there are also some files that are intended as user editable files (those that which the DenyHosts user creates and edits as appropriate). allowed-hosts - contains a list of ip addresses that are exempt from being denied by DenyHosts. Normally when you request a page your request goes directly to the site serving the page, even if this is overseas. Multiple requests for the same page increase network traffic and slow things down. If you configure your browser to use a proxy, your request goes to the proxy. If the page is stored in the proxy's disk space (cache) then it can be sent right back to you - without needing to go overseas.
