UNIX was originally blessed with simple file-based ''databases'', +namely the dbm system. dbm lets you store data in files, and retrieve that data quickly. However, it also has serious drawbacks. File Locking The dbm systems did not allow particularly robust file locking capabilities, nor any capability for correcting problems arising + through simultaneous writes [ to the database ]. Arbitrary Data Structures The dbm systems only allows a single fixed data structure: key-value pairs.

Seriously, the 2.4 GHz frequency is absorbed by water (think microwave ovens) and wood, and what isn't absorbed is reflected. Think about the 5000+ leaves on a tree blowing in the wind. 5000+ little reflectors interfering with your 2.4 GHz signal. Thus 2.4 GHz signals do best in free space, or in line of sight applications. We have significantly increased the database size in SPECjAppServer2004. While still relatively small, the chances of caching the whole database in memory have been significantly reduced. Since SPECjAppServer2004 focuses on evaluating application server performance, a small but reasonably sized database seems to be far more appropriate than using database sizes equivalent to the ones used in pure database benchmarks. Berkeley DB are single file databases which can carry information using various methods from hashing to binary search trees. These files have the additional capability of being implemented directly into Perl cutting out a lot of overhead when used. Ethereal Realms uses this format of database in order to cache frequently accessed information cutting down on database load.
