What's DBM? And why should I use DBI instead?

AnnoCPAN - DBI::FAQ
UNIX was originally blessed with simple file-based ''databases'', +namely the dbm system. dbm lets you store data in files, and retrieve that data quickly. However, it also has serious drawbacks. File Locking The dbm systems did not allow particularly robust file locking capabilities, nor any capability for correcting problems arising + through simultaneous writes [ to the database ]. Arbitrary Data Structures The dbm systems only allows a single fixed data structure: key-value pairs.

How do I install DBI?

Soupermail Frequently Asked Questions
To install and use Soupermail's database support, you will need to install the DBI module (all other Soupermail functions work fine without it though). It is very unlikely that you'll be able to install the DBI module in your cgi-bin area - generally, it has to be installed by the server's administrator. In addition to the DBI module, you'll also need a database driver module (DBD), specific to your database. See similar questions...

Can I become a part of DB?

dattebayo fansubs :: FAQ
Generally we are only recruiting translators, so unless you are a translator, the answer is no. We are always looking for Japanese to English translators. While we occasionally release non-English subs, we are currently NOT looking for Spanish / German / Dutch / Norwegian / Swedish translators, another words, no languages with roman alphabet. We will review other translation offers on a case-by-case basis. See similar questions...

How does one convert Watts to dBm?

Wireless ISP FAQ - dslreports.com
Use a calculator, conversion table (pdf) or equation to convert the power units. Here is a short conversion table: Note, doubling the wattage increases dBm by 3. Here is a more comprehensive tutorial on Using and Understanding Decibels. The maximum output power allowed for wireless Ethernet (802.11, 802.11b, etc.) by the FCC at 2.4Ghz is 36dBm or 4Watts. How do you convert between dBm and Watts?

Netgate
Seriously, the 2.4 GHz frequency is absorbed by water (think microwave ovens) and wood, and what isn't absorbed is reflected. Think about the 5000+ leaves on a tree blowing in the wind. 5000+ little reflectors interfering with your 2.4 GHz signal. Thus 2.4 GHz signals do best in free space, or in line of sight applications. When you think line of sight you probably think about a line, right? Unfortunately it's not that simple. See similar questions...

How fast is the DBI?

DBI - Database independent interface for Perl
To measure the speed of the DBI and DBD::Oracle code I modified DBD::Oracle such that you can set an attribute which will cause the same row to be fetched from the row cache over and over again (without involving Oracle code but exercising *all* the DBI and DBD::Oracle code in the code path for a fetch). How realistic is the DB size for medium and large configurations?

SPECjAppServer2004 Frequently Asked Questions
The following table shows the approximate raw data size used to load the database for different benchmark injection rates: Actual storage space consumed by the RDBMS and all the supporting structures (i.e. indices) is far higher, however. It is not unreasonable, for example, to have the database consuming 5GB of disk space to support runs at IR=100. There are a large number of factors -- both RDBMS- and configuration-dependent -- that influence the actual disk space required. See similar questions...

If the size of the DB is very small, almost all of it can be cached. Is this realistic?

SPECjAppServer2004 Frequently Asked Questions
We have significantly increased the database size in SPECjAppServer2004. While still relatively small, the chances of caching the whole database in memory have been significantly reduced. Since SPECjAppServer2004 focuses on evaluating application server performance, a small but reasonably sized database seems to be far more appropriate than using database sizes equivalent to the ones used in pure database benchmarks. These files have the additional capability of being implemented directly into Perl cutting out a lot of overhead when used. Ethereal Realms uses this format of database in order to cache frequently accessed information cutting down on database load. For more information on this matter look up the 'How do I make use of cache' question in this FAQ. See similar questions...
