The City Operator is available to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to help direct your call to correct City department. You can make a service request to address the issue of a barking dog or dogs. We will send an officer out to talk to the owner and educate about the ordinance. If this doesn’t work we can investigate the situation further and proceed based on the evidence. Our officers are now able to take a sworn written statement from the complainant who has witnessed a violation and the circumstances of the violation and it will be filed with District Court.

Call Police Department (675-8467) and give us as much information you can about where the dog lives when it barks, etc… We will contact the owner about the problem and if the problem is not resolved, the owner can get a nuisance dog citation.

My dogs bark at every stranger that walks by the house or mail man or garbage man. Is there any way to stop my dogs from barking so much, I am worried that my neighbors are getting irritated. We are having some trouble keeping our dog from digging up the bulbs in our rock gardens. She keeps digging no matter what we do. My dog has gotten into the habit of nipping at my feet when I am in the kitchen only. He is showing signs of getting more aggressive.

The Dog Warden will write and advise the dog owner that a complaint has been received concerning noise from his pet. The letter seeks to raise awareness of the problem and asks the dog owner to take steps to minimise disturbance. Your details as the person complaining are not passed on without your consent. the same time, you will be asked to complete a diary of disturbances to enable the Dog Warden to determine whether the barking is unreasonable.

Before reporting a dog that barks loudly and frequently, first try to contact the dog's owner. If the problem is not resolved contact the Police Department at (415) 467-1122. The Police Department will investigate all barking dog complaints and will try to contact the owner of the dog. Many times the owner is unaware the dog is causing a problem for neighbors and is willing to take immediate action to correct the problem. We will not tell the responsible person who made the complaint.

the time of the first complaint, SEAACA will send a written notice of the problem to the location where the barking problem exists and to you. This is usually sufficient to resolve the problem. There are additional steps that SEAACA will take if the problem persists. Lakewood's animal care provider is the Southeast Area Animal Control Authority (SEAACA). The SEAACA handles pet licensing, adoptions, stray and dead animal pick up. They should be called with inquiries about missing pets.

The CC&R's, Art. IV, Sec 2. b. mentions animals and is primarily directed to 'a reasonable number' and for domestic purposes. A single sentence mentions nuisance or unreasonable noise. In the case of dogs, the Association's position has been to inform by mail and seek the cooperation of the dog owner. But, if that fails it is up to the complainant to take whatever legal action is necessary to bring relief. It would be the same as a noise complaint about a loud party, music, or engine noise.

Normally, we would ask that you talk with your neighbors/owners about the situation first, but if that does not work, we don't mind giving them a warning. If that does not work, you will have to come to the shelter and pick up a noise complaint packet that gives you instructions on what steps you should take next.

Call dispatch at 307-721-2526. Usually, as a neighbor, it is encouraged to that you try to resolve these issues in a friendly way. Sometimes with an ongoing problem, you may be asked to create a log of nuisance barking for presentation in court.

The Durham County Animal Control Department takes care of all animal services in both the City and County. They can be reached at 919-560-0630 during business hours. After hours, either leave a message or call 911 if there is an emergency such as a dog bite or an injured animal. We must witness the dog barking or running loose. If you have a complaint, call while the action is in progress, not after the dog has been tied up or has stopped barking.

It is the nature of a dog to protect his "home" by barking to ward off strangers; however repetitive barking is not only unnecessary, but also annoying to those who live within earshot. If you are being disturbed by excessive dog barking, call the police department at the Non-Emergency Number listed above and an officer will respond to the home of the barking dog to speak to it's owners.

It is always recommended to speak with the neighbor first, to advise them of the concern about the barking. If it persists, there is a complaint process you must go through. Three neighbors complaints are needed before action can be taken. It is a violation for a dog to bark in a manner that disturbs the peace of a neighborhood. We are aware that dogs will bark when they see something or someone. We look for a cause of the of the dog's barking or whether the dog is barking for no reason.
