NSTAR and other gas companies add an odor to gas so you will know if natural gas is leaking. If you smell gas, NSTAR has some important safety procedures for you to follow. NSTAR Gas provides 24-hour emergency service every day of the year. Make sure to call 800-592-2000.

Natural and propane gases are colorless and odorless. Clearwater Gas System adds a distinctive odor resembling rotten eggs, so that you can smell the gas immediately should a leak occur. A faint odor of gas maybe attributed to a pilot light that has gone out and should be re-lit. A strong gas odor indicates that you should leave your home at once. The small triangle in the upper left corner of the water meter is a leak detector. If the triangle is rotating, water is moving through the meter. This detector will detect flows small enough that the sweep hand may appear to be standing still. The leak indicator can detect even the smallest amount of water being used. To check for leaks, turn everything off in the house that uses water, even an icemaker.

It is illegal for anyone to use a gas appliance if they suspect it is unsafe. Turn the appliance off and do not touch it until it has been checked by a CORGI-registered installer. Free leaflets explaining some of the main requirements of landlords, under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and general gas safety information are available from HSE.

Shortly after the gas release, Union Carbide launched an aggressive effort to identify the cause. An initial investigation by Union Carbide experts showed that a large volume of water had apparently been introduced into the methylisocyanate (MIC) tank. This caused a chemical reaction that forced the pressure release valve to open and allowed the gas to leak. A committee of experts working on behalf of the Indian government conducted its own investigation and reached the same conclusion.

Get everyone out of the house as soon as possible and call 911 from a neighbor's house. Do not turn anything electric on or off. Alert the neighbors and leave the immediate area.

Odds are you won't have a natural gas leak in your home; but if you do, your nose will let you know. Answer: Stop using the gas stove; open up the windows, and immediately try to contact Faculty Services or Administrative personnel. See “AUA. General Information” brochure for their home numbers. In general, keep a window open when you are using a gas stove.

Although the flammability of propane is less than that of other fuels, it's best to be cautious should you smell gas. Here are the appropriate steps: If you smell gas, call us at 1-800-822-1300, option 9. The odorant added to propane smells like rotten eggs. If the gas leak is inside, do not turn on or off any light switches or electrical appliances. Open doors and windows to allow fresh air into the building, then leave the building.

Natural Gas is both colorless and odorless. The "rotten egg" smell is added to the gas for your safety.
