SMS messages, including email messages to your phone, are sent at the first available time that your phone is in range of the service. If you are out of range or the phone is turned off when a message comes in, it is queued and delivered the next time you turn the phone on, or within range. The message is queued for up to seven days (network dependant), after which it will stop trying to deliver the message to your phone.

Yes. You can also decide on an individual basis, which contacts to forward messages from (e.g. only close friends and family). You won't be able to send any MMS messages. However, you can still receive such messages. Whenever someone sends you a MMS message, you will receive a SMS notification.
