The grub-killing insecticide imidacloprid (dubbed "Merit") is a chlorinated nicotine-like chemical. It acts upon the nervous system, as do many insecticides. Imidacloprid is also used as a deterrent to birds eating seed, and may similarly curtail control of grubs by birds, which would be counter-productive. Imidacloprid is highly toxic to bees. Imidacloprid is soluble, mobile in some soils and may pollute water. It is persistent.

Answer: To control weeds, you can over-seed your lawn twice a year (early spring & early fall) to help prevent weed growth. Grubs are actually the larval stage of a variety of different kinds of beetles, including May and June bugs and voracious Japanese beetles. Spread it around in piles on the lawn with a wheelbarrow. Sling it from the piles onto the grass with a shovel. Then use a push broom to sweep it off the grass blades and down into the turf. Limestone is used in lawn care to counteract the effects of acids in the soil. Much of the precipitation that falls has a pH level of ~ 5. The best time to control grubs is when the larvae are small and actively feeding near the surface. This is usually late July to mid August. Application in September may be required to control late hatching larvae.
