XP Embedded is a modular version of XP Professional. OEM's such as HomeSeer Technologies are licensed to create their own versions of the operating system. HomeSeer has created a version of XP that contains only the necessary operating system components to support the unit's control software and add-ons. This greatly reduces the size of the operating system while improving performance. When HomeTroller boots, it uses only 128 MB of Ram.

Microsoft is aiming to combine the features of Windows Me for the consumer, and reliability of Windows 2000 for businesses and power users into one new operating system.
