What's the difference between raster and vector files?

Frequent Asked Questions
A raster image is roughly equivalent to a newspaper photograph. If you look closely you see that it is made up of lots of small dots. The density of these dots is referred to by resolution, measured in dots per inch (stated as 'dpi'). Raster files are stored in many file formats, TIFF is a common example. Vectors are used to describe specific objects defining their size, position and geometry. The image seen on screen in a CAD application is only a visual representation of the vector file.

What is the difference between vector and raster objects?

Inventive-Design
Raster objects are made up of pixels and are considered resolution dependent because they contain a fixed number of pixels that are used to create the image. They will lose quality if enlarged beyond the number of pixels needed in a particular use. Since there is a fixed and therefore a limited number of pixels, the image becomes fuzzy as it is enlarged. What's the difference between raster and vector maps?

Frequently asked questions:
A raster map is a picture. Just like you have a picture on the wall, you have a picture on the screen. Each one of the pixel elements, or pixels, on the screen is just a representation of a picture. With a raster image you do not have any access to the objects in the picture, so if you have a picture of a coastline with bathymetry and buoy markers and shipping lanes, there is no way for you to select the shipping lanes, buoy markers or get a different type of coast line for that picture. What is the difference between "vector" and "raster" images?

FAQ for comp.graphics.apps.paint-shop-pro
A vector image is constructed as a collection of abstract mathematical shapes, and these shapes preserve their identity when you scale the image or add or delete a shape. So, a vector image is resolution-independent. But rendering the image on a screen or a raster printer (both laser printers and ink-jet printers are raster printers) requires calculating an equivalent bitmap, which is slow. What is the difference between Vector images and Raster images?

LT'S Inc. is Portland Maine and Southern Maine's Embroidery,...
Vector images are the best type of artwork to give your image the best look on both the screen-printed and embroidered work. A vector image is made up of lines which are a mathematical equation. The benefit of vector art is that it can be sized as big or as small as you like, but the capabilities in quality of vector art is limited. Raster images are different from vector art because the image is made up of small dots or pixel. Each pixel on the image has an actual defined color. See similar questions...

What is raster, vector art?

Midwest Conference Service - Frequently Asked Questions
These terms are used to classify the type of data a graphics file contains. Raster files (also called bitmapped files) contain graphics information described as pixels, such as photographic images. Vector files contain data described as mathematical equations and are typically used to store line art and CAD information. Vector files have the additional capability of being scaleable meaning that ordinarily, no image editing is necessary. See similar questions...

What's the difference between vector and bitmap files?

FAQ -=> Artwork
Vector graphics are made up of many individual objects. These objects are defined mathematically as a series of control points joined by lines or curves. Each object is self-contained, with properties such as color, shape, outline, size, and position on the screen. As an example, to draw a red square with a black outline, the software only has to know the position of the 4 corner control points, draw black lines between them, then fill the enclosed space with red. Why can't I just edit my raster files and not have to bother taking them to vector?

Frequent Asked Questions
Raster files are excellent for visual purposes - after all they are a picture of the original image. Adobe Photoshop, Corel and other excellent raster editing softwares are available to enable you to edit raster images. However all CAD software (and some graphics drawing packages) use vector objects instead of rasters. The primary benefits are ability to precisely describe, create, scale and manipulate individual objects. There's also efficiency in storage and output to plotters or printers. How come some vector files are bigger than the raster image file? Should this happen?

Frequent Asked Questions
The raster image size is based upon the resolution (dpi) and the physical size of the image. The vector file size is based upon the number of vectors required to represent the raster file: Say the raster image is comprised of curved lines and the vectorizing software mode selected only creates vector files comprised of straight lines, arcs and circles. In this mode the resultant vectors of the curves have to be represented by an arc, or a line or a circle. See similar questions...

Can TracTrix show a vector over a raster?

Frequent Asked Questions
Yes, this is a facility in TracTrix for CAD and is a handy way to check that the vectors represent the raster image. See similar questions...

Are the data in the digital data sets vector or raster data, and what is the difference?

Frequently Asked Questions
Both vector and raster data are in the digital data sets. The vector data are included so that users who want to insert geologic features or parts of features into their own work can pick, choose, and manipulate the specific features they are interested in. The vector format permits a high degree of interaction and manipulation of the geology when using appropriate software. Raster data are from a scanned image of the vector data plotted at 1:24,000 scale and are in jpg format. See similar questions...

How do I upload vector illustrations or Flash files?

Frequently Asked Questions | iStockphoto.com
Save your vector illustration as an Adobe Illustrator 8 .EPS (Encapsulated Postscript) file. Your EPS file should be saved as an AI8 compatible EPS. If you would like to include alternate file formats (AI, PDF, etc) you can place them in a separate ZIP folder Flash Files: Create a 380 pixel (wide or tall, depending on the orientation of your animation.) RGB JPEG preview of your file. See similar questions...

Is PDF a raster format or a vector format?

LineType Software - FAQ
PDF supports both raster (bitmap) and vector (line) formats. When a PDF is created by printing from a vector-based application such as AutoCAD or an illustration program, the resulting PDF contains vectors describing all the lines, arcs, and shapes in the drawing. The output can be scaled with no loss of resolution, and viewers can zoom in on the lines in the drawing without seeing any 'jaggies". See similar questions...

Do you use raster or vector art forms?

Getting your business forms online - Graphic Arts, Programmi...
If your picture changes for each form, you will need it in raster format. Our system is a template driven process and as such your original document can contain either vector or raster formatted images. To further explain, say your business cards require a picture of the employee. Your company logo is a vector art image. We would set the business card template with your logo already imbedded. Each time you create a new card you would upload a picture of the employee (. See similar questions...

When do I save a raster image, and when do I save as Vector?

Vinyl Banners - Digital Banners and Banner Printing - Custom...
Vector is the file format you use when the image is made with paths and fills, It's the only format you can cut vinyl from. Raster would be used for photos, complex images, gradation colors and all other images containing more than two or three colors. Raster images can only be printed. Vector images can be printed or computer cut. See similar questions...

How is a vector different from a raster data format?

Land Cover Analysis - General FAQs
A vector data model is based on points, lines, and areas defined by drawing boundaries around features and labeling or attributing them. The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) is an example of a vector database. Environmental scientists manually delineate wetlands from aerial photography and attribute them with the type of wetland for use in vector-based geographic information system (GIS). The vector data format is well suited for representing linear features and the human landscape. See similar questions...

Why is raster viewing important if vector viewing is readily available?

Welcome to PIXIA
Raster data has many advantages over vector data. Raster data has a much greater level of detail of the physical environment than vector data since all features are shown at once. Vector layers may include roads or transmission lines while raster data will depict the exact dimensions of the roads or the trees surrounding a particular transmission pole. Humans manually create vector data while raster data illustrates the actual physical environment pixel for pixel. See similar questions...

How do I know if my file is a vector file or a raster (bitmap) file?

Visigraph Corporation - Signs - Banners - Decals - Graphic D...
There are a couple of ways. The best and quickest way, if you can open the file, is to zoom in on the edge of a letter. If you see lots of little squares (pixels or bitmaps), you have a raster file. If it looks clean like a line that you draw with a ballpoint pin, you more than likely have a vector file. The second way is to look at the file extension. See similar questions...
