What is Black Tuesday and when does it occur?

Math Department Computing FAQ
It's the day when Microsoft releases patches. It occurs on the second Tuesday of every month. Microsoft being Microsoft, they also release patches at other times ("off-cycle"), based on, well, nothing I've ever been able to figure out. IE patches are most likely to be released off-cycle. My email response time goes way up, as I spend most of the rest of the week patching PCs and have time for little else. The PCs servers will be patched and rebooted (usually) on Sunday morning.

Why does the screen go black and lose sync when I boot?

Frequently Asked Questions for FreeBSD 2.X, 3.X and 4.X
This is a known problem with the ATI Mach 64 video card. The problem is that this card uses address 2e8, and the fourth serial port does too. Due to a bug (feature?) in the sio(4) driver it will touch this port even if you do not have the fourth serial port, and even if you disable sio3 (the fourth port) which normally uses this address. Disable sio0, sio1, sio2 and sio3 (all of them). This way the sio driver does not get activated -> no problems. See similar questions...

The theory about this that makes most sense is called Trophotropism. The easiest way to explain this is to make a comparison to a plant. The immune system defends your body by producing "killer" cells that destroy foreign substances (such as viruses and bacteria). Rejection is nature's way of protecting your body. See similar questions...
