We start by selecting a route that avoids sensitive areas whenever possible. This route is based on detailed professional surveys and studies. We also mark wetlands and culturally important sites that need to be avoided during construction. Next, we are very careful around the sites during construction. We choose only qualified and experienced professional pipeline builders. By doing this, we minimize the impact of construction activities on these sites.

Southern Natural Gas Company (SNG), a subsidiary of El Paso Corporation, is headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama, and has been in the natural gas pipeline business since 1929. SNG is the premier provider of natural gas transportation services in the Southeast, transporting more than 3 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day during peak periods to customers from Louisiana to South Carolina, including Georgia and Florida.

To preserve the longevity of a natural stone installation it is very important to protect it with a proper sealer. All natural stone are porous (granite less than ? % water). As long as we have an absorption factor, stone will stain and deteriorate over time since the regular tap water used in maintenance contains salts, minerals and chlorine -which are all detrimental to natural stone.

Wetlands are the most productive ecosystems on earth. They are areas saturated by surface or groundwater that support hydric, or water-loving, vegetation. They filter and remove harmful pollutants and contaminants from water, which makes cleaner water in lakes and rivers. Wetlands moderate flooding, prevent soil erosion, and recharge groundwater. SNG’s proposed route is almost completely within existing pipeline and electric utility corridors. In most cases, these utility rights of way belong to other companies, and we will work with these companies to utilize the existing rights of way to the extent possible. Southern proposes a 50 foot permanent easement adjacent to the existing power line right of way to minimize construction and operational safety issues and to provide access to the pipeline.

When we begin construction of the pipeline in cultivated areas, Southern Natural Gas’s contractor will clear the right of way of trees and brush, and will collect the topsoil and hold it separate from the subsoils. After the trench for the pipeline is dug and the pipeline is placed in the trench, the subsoil will be used to fill the trench and the topsoil will be placed on top of the subsoil.

Our experience is that most property owners will voluntarily agree to participate in a pipeline project like this one by signing an easement at a negotiated price. In a small number of cases, an agreement cannot be reached. Interstate natural gas pipelines do have the right of eminent domain, once a certificate of public convenience and necessity is obtained from the FERC.

You should feel free to contact your land agent any time you have a question about our project. At a minimum, your land agent will contact you as soon as our current property survey work is complete or if a re-survey of your property might be required. Some further adjustments may be necessary after we make our application to the FERC in the spring of 2005 to accommodate variations required by the FERC staff.

Natural gas may be stored in a number of different ways. It is most commonly stored underground under pressure in three types of facilities. The most commonly used in California are depleted reservoirs in oil and/or gas fields because they are more available. Aquifers and salt cavern formations are also used under certain conditions. The characteristics and economics of each type of storage site will dictate its suitability for use.

When Nicor Gas buys gas on your behalf and delivers it to your home, we charge you exactly what we paid for it-we are not allowed to mark it up, by regulation of the Illinois Commerce Commission. The cost of natural gas makes up about 75-80 percent of your bill. The delivery charge makes up about 10-15 percent, and taxes make up the remaining 5-10 percent.

Southern Natural Gas intends to apply for permission to construct and operate the pipeline in the spring of 2005. The FERC review process will take approximately 9 to 12 months to complete. If approved, construction of the pipeline could begin in the fall of 2006, and the pipeline would then begin flowing gas by May 2007.

Natural gas is primarily methane, which is a major greenhouse gas. Methane is emitted directly to the atmosphere from sources such as leaks in natural gas wells and pipelines and is produced in landfills, sewage treatment facilities and livestock operations. Other major greenhouse gases, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxides are produced when natural gas is burned for heating and electric power production.

Non-toxic liquefied natural gas is just another form of the same natural gas that heats our homes, fuels the new generation of cleaner power plants, and fuels our cleanest buses and other vehicles. The only difference is that it has been liquefied – turned from a gaseous state to a liquid state, just as water vapor turns into water – by chilling it, so that it can be safely and efficiently transported across the seas in double-hulled carriers.
