How do I solder heavy gauge wire?
DuraTrax - Product Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)Soldering heavy gauge wire is one of those things that is an acquired skill. Like many things, once you learn it, it becomes relatively easy. Silver solder will produce a MUCH stronger joint. It comes with a liquid flux. It is more sensitive to the correct temperature and it is also more expensive. Start by making sure the wires are very clean. We recommend sanding them where they are to be soldered with 150 grit sandpaper. Then clean them with alcohol (isopropyl, rubbing alcohol).
What gauge speaker wire should I use in my system?
Amplifier Frequently Asked QuestionsFor the best speaker damping and least amount of power loss you will want to use the heaviest gauge that is practical. The length of the speaker wire should be considered when considering wire gauge. The shorter the run, the smaller gauge you can use with minimum power and damping factor loss. The longer the run, the heavier gauge you will need to minimize power and damping factor loss. You will also want to consider the size of power amplifier you are using. See similar questions...

What gauge wire should I use?
RCS Faq's pageWe suggest using 16 or 18 gauge wire to get power to your layout, depending on its size. For larger layouts run a larger gauge bus wire underneath your benchwork and tap of from that to your track about every 6 or 8 feet. For DZ1000 switch machine, which require very little power, we recomend 22 to 26 gauge stranded preferably with tinned (soldered) ends. This will help the set screw bite into it without splaying out the strands. See similar questions...
WHAT GAUGE WIRE IS USED ON THE CRATES?
The wire gauge varies by type of crate. The main ones used are 6-, 9- and 12- gauge wire. See the specifications on each type for actual gauge. The "Fold & Carry" crates fold into a suitcase-like package with a handle in the center. The "Pin Series", a.k.a. "Square-back", take apart with pin construction into a flat package due to the interlocking panel construction. These crates are put together by use of a "Shepard's hook" pin. Why do you offer "heavy" and "light" gauge models, and what's the difference between the 2 options?
Fouke Industrial Guitars Frequently Asked Questionsa: I developed the 2 optional metal gauges over the years to accommodate my 2 main lap steel customers. The first is the light gauge model customer, who wished to have a bit more acoustic volume for jamming with friends, playing around the campfire, on the porch, in the office, or for louder acoustic practice, etc. They still wanted the ability to plug the steel into an amp, and play on stage in many cases, and the light gauge model delivers as an "all purpose" model.
