Duratemp is plywood siding with a 1/8" Douglas Fir wood composite face. It looks natural, resists dents, checks and cracks. The American Plywood Association recommends that opaque (solid) colors be applied to plywood sidings of any softwood species for exterior application. The use of semi-transparent stains is not recommended because the variations in the texture and porosity of face veneers from piece to piece will cause a lack of uniformity. Plywood is widely used in European 'bots for armor, but is generally passed-over by U.S. competitors as being too "low tech". It has some very attractive properties; foremost in my mind is that it does not bend. I've seen many 'bots disabled by bent armor interfering with wheels or other moving parts. SELECT: Should be solid face, can allow some veneer splits, no wider than 1/16" knots are allowed, but must be sound and tight, not more than 1-1/4" in diameter. The basic difference between marine plywood and exterior plywood: marine plywood does not contain voids (edge voids are easily filled with wood putty). Taping the seams and edges with fiberglass will effectively seal exposed edge voids. Both marine and exterior plywood contain essentially the same glues. Because boats of this nature are not left in the water for extended periods of time and the difficulty in obtaining marine plywood, we feel that exterior plywood offers distinct advantages. Hardboard siding is fine-grained sawdust and wood waste product combined with resins (glue) using high heat and pressure. Although this material has been manufactured since the 1940's, the bulk of the material was installed on properties from 1980 to 1998. These properties include, apartments, townhomes, condominiums, manufactured homes and single-family homes. Most manufacturers have discontinued manufacturing hardboard siding. The durability of plywood is determined by the quality of the veneers and the glue lines. Obviously, the rot resistance of the veneer timber will determine this aspect of the finished product.
