Currently, no "first" or "second generation" drives have been shipped with the new firmware version factory installed. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that your drive will already be equiped with this new version. However, the firmware installation utilitity will check and display you current firmware version, and will notify you when your firmware is already up-to-date.

It is not definitely necessary to update the firmware unless your computer does encounter any problem.

The latest software for the PORTADISC MDP 500 is version 1.50. The version is shown briefly after power up on the MDP’s boot-up page. If your MDP contains a version other than v1.50, contact your dealer for instructions on getting your MDP updated to the current release.

Most writing software has an option for showing CD recorder information, which will include the firmware version. Check the firmware version using your writing software, which will have an option for CD recorder information, including the firmware version. Or you can also check it using the RFlash/Firmware Flash Utility program for uploading the firmware.

Login the router, click "Status" at the top corner, then check "Runtime Code Version". The runtime code version is the firmware version.

Lots of boot and some performance problems can be attributed to firmware "bugs". All machines print the PDC revision at boot up. Or once at "Main Menu>" or "BOOT_ADMIN>" one can print the PDC revision with "in fv" (c3000) or "in" (712) command. Putting more intelligence in any software module will increase the odds of having bugs. Since firmware updates (aka patches) are freely available (below), the latest firmware is required when reporting problems instead of attempting other workarounds.

This is how you can check your Firmware version number. Press Menu and go to the setup menu (blue wrench on the left). Go in, and then select screen #1. Hold down the center OK button on the 4-way switch and at the same time press the Info button (i+) at the top. This will display a little dialog with the primary version of the firmware. Early S2000 readers used an EEPROM that became obsolete and the socket was changed. These readers cannot be upgraded. We do not sell the EEPROMS but for later readers (Firmware v 1.32 or later), you may be able to get a third party to copy the EEPROM. The EEPROM is ATMEL AT27C512R.
