SSID stands for "Set Station Identifier", and provides a meaningful name for Wireless Access Points (WAPs). For instance, a large company might have separate WAPs (using different wireless channels) for their Sales and Warehouse departments. These departments might be located in the same building, with some overlap of wireless range.
