Only an expert can tell, and even they are sometimes fooled. They look for paper condition and print quality, printer's marks and numbers, picture and paper size. An expert is usually familiar with the characteristics of known reprints, like off-colors or print method. Sometimes only a direct comparison with a undisputed original can tell. Different from reproduction, original oil painting is created by our artists with their unique thoughts instead of reproducing the famous paintings. A good original oil painting takes a long time for the artist to finish as it involves the long process of material collection, prophase preparation and composition of the painting etc. Therefore it has very high value of correction. We maintain that the person who does the needlework deserves the credit, so by all means sign (and date) your work. The girl who stitched the original sampler very likely copies parts of it from one of her classmates, siblings, or teachers, so it is not a totally original design. Perhaps it could be compared to buying an original watercolor or a printed copy. Some people don't see the difference. Personally, I feel you cannot compare the beauty of an original painting to a poster. It's difficult to tell the difference unless you have both, hand painted tiles and reproduction, in front of you. Usually, no- consumer digital cameras do not have sufficient resolution and image quality to correctly reproduce original artwork. Whereas most digital cameras have resolution of about 3-6 megabytes, high resolution files for giclees are typically 100-450 megabytes in size.
