The term RDI stands for Respiratory Disturbance Index and is a very important measure of the severity of the sleep disorder. The RDI is a number that represents how many times per hour breathing stops or becomes very shallow. This index is important because it is often associated with disruption of sleep and dangerous drops in blood oxygen levels. Most physicians agree that an RDI below 5 is normal while an RDI over 30 may indicate severe disease.

Relationship Development Intervention? requires both commitment and perseverance from families. Both fathers and mothers are essential participants in the treatment process. Given the challenges that our children on the spectrum face and the goals that RDI? aspires to achieve, RDI? is not a short term intervention solution. Although progress can be seen almost immediately, gaining true competency in dynamic systems takes time.

It differs from other programs in several ways. First, it is a Remediation Program. It treats the autism and not the symptoms of autism. (See my discussion on landing page). Second, RDI? is the only treatment program that uses developmental model. This means that the intervention is developmentally appropriate for each child. Thirdly, RDI? Teaches dynamic intelligence. This is the opposite of a traditional applied behavior analysis approach.

The answer to that question is "Yes" and "No." When children are at the earlier stages of RDI? one-on-one with an adult is required. However, once the children have mastered the early stages, dyads and small groups can be formed.

RDI? believes that ASD individuals deserve a second chance at having the opportunity to know how to do relationships. Through what is called "Guided Participation" parents and child, adolescent or adult can learn how to reestablish meaningful relationships.

There are many autism therapies other than ABA that are available, and we believe that many of these therapies have helped some children with autism. In time, we hope there will be other therapies that also will be shown to be effective through rigorous research. LA FEAT encourages parents to start with a quality, intensive ABA program. You may also want to consider alternative therapies, particularly if you child is not progressing to your satisfaction in the ABA program.

ODEP stands for Output Device Emulator Protection. ODEP is an analog computer simulation of the output device thermal impedance. In layman's terms ODEP stores how much power the amplifier delivers to its load and its heatsink temperature. If the protection circuit determines that the output stage is being overstressed or cannot dissipate any further heat, then output stage drive is limited (Also see the FAQ, "What is TLC?" below).

UMF stands for "Unique Manuka Factor", and is the trademark for the special antibacterial property found in Manuka Honey. When honey is diluted, a special enzyme the bees have added produces hydrogen peroxide, a well known antibiotic. Manuka Honey has been found to have an antibacterial activity in addition to hydrogen peroxide. No one has so far discovered the substance involved, so it is called UMF.
