Yes. Kaleidescape Players and Readers are only able to read Region 1 DVDs as shipped. The installer can use the Web Utility to set these components to any other region, but it is not possible to set them to be region-free, and you can only change the region of a given component up to four times. These restrictions are dictated by Kaleidescape's CSS License Agreement with the DVD Copy Control Association, Inc. You can have multiple Players and Readers in the same System set to different regions.

All of the DVDs on our site are formatted as Region 1. Therefore, if you live outside of North America, you will need a multiregion DVD player in order to watch the DVDs.

You need to be able to either change the Regional Code on your player or switch it be become 'multi-region'. If you own a PC, you can easily download software that allows you to switch between Regions. If you own a stand-alone player, it is can be slightly more difficult. Many players can be 'hacked', usually by pressing a sequence of buttons on the remote and there are many websites that list such hacks. If your player can't be hacked then you can get it chipped or modified.

To play a region 1 DVD on a European PS2, you will need a "DVD Region X" peripheral. These can be bought from any good video games shop.

Not yet. The 25Hz for PAL/SECAM is hardcoded. I'd like to get it supported, but I don't have any beta-tester yet able to receive any NTSC station. No, it doesn't. And it is not something planned either, I have spend my money on a fast CPU instead. (But I'm not against it, so feel free to send in a patch.) Not yet. DBV-t is being worked on, if that is finished I will probably buy a DVB-s card and start implementing satellite support. But count on a timeframe of months, not weeks.

If a DVD is not recognized, you can enter the information yourself using the Web Utility. If this DVD is later recognized by the Kaleidescape Movie Guide Service, then the Kaleidescape information will overwrite the information you entered. Once a DVD is recognized by the Movie Guide Service, you can however edit any of the information about the DVD- for example, you can assign a different parental control rating.

DVDs are region protected, which means that players in Region 1 (US/Canada) can't play DVDs from other regions (Japan, Europe, etc). This concept is similar to the region protection on the Sony PlayStation. The Hollywood Plus software allows you to change the region code of your Hollywood Plus up to 5 times, before the region code can no longer be changed and requires the board to be sent in for resetting.

Yes! As a general rule, all our DVDs and VIDEOS we offer are available in both PAL and NTSC. All DVDs and VIDEOS we send to USA and any other NTSC countries are automatically sent in the NTSC system, open region if it is a DVD. The few DVDs we have marked as NTSC only or PAL only on our site are often available on VHS in NTSC or PAL, same price. These are usually "A" prefix coded. Just put VHS in the special instructions section of the on-line order form for a DVD listing.

More often then not, this is caused by having a player that is capable of converting NTSC (The US TV standard) to PAL50 (The UK standard). This technology allows TV's that are incapable of NTSC/PAL60 to view US DVD's however there is a down side. The conversion drops every 5th frame or so leading to the noticeable judder. Some players handle this better then others.

NTSC is the television system in use in Korea, Japan, United States, Canada and certain other places, mostly in the Americas. It is named for the National Television Systems Committee, the industry-wide standardization body that created it. This format is generally not viewable in DVD players other than the countries listed above.

Yes, as long as the alternate-format DVDs are region 0 (zero - sometimes called "region free"). In other words, you can play DVDs that match the region of your DVD kit, plus all region 0 DVDs, regardless of PAL or NTSC video format.

We normally produce PAL DVDs, as they are both the Australian and International standard, and produce the highest quality output (625 lines of resolution instead of 525). However, these will not work in the USA or Canada. We can also produce NTSC DVDs for the USA and Canada upon request.

We can do either. If you wish for your DVD to play in PAL TV's, the Authoring process and format must be in PAL in order to play on the PAL formatted Televisions/players.

It's a common misconception that simply because a video format is digital it is no longer PAL or NTSC. All digital video formats (DVD, Mini-DV, DVCAM, etc.) are still based on the PAL, SECAM, NTSC video systems.
