Planned obsolescence! No, not really. Two main reasons. Removing the sole requires the use of a solvent which is usually soaked up by the upper as well. The sewing machine needle we use to sew through the crepe is much larger than other needles so it creates larger perforations in the leather. By the time the crepe wears out the slipper is usually quite weak anyway and would never hold a new stitch with that needle. The new sole would likely tear right off.

Plainly stated there is absolutely no difference between the shearling soled slippers and the ones with crepe soles except for the addition of the crepe. We use both cementing and stitching to secure the crepe to the bottom and have been very pleased with the durability of the final product. While the cement does most of the hard work, the stitching helps to keep the edges secure which is where most sole separation will start to occur.

We recommend hand washing using a very mild LIQUID HAND SOAP. DO NOT use any detergents, delicate washes, wool washes or antibacterials. These can leach out the natural oils and the leather could become stiff. We also advise against washing the entire slipper unless it becomes absolutely necessary, as some colour can be lost when washed. Please note that some stains, such as heavy foods, oil or nail polish will not come out with washing.

If you wash the entire slipper, stuff the interior with a towel to wick moisture from the wool prior to letting dry. Dry them in a "toe-up" position at room temperature (so any remaining moisture will drain to the slipper opening where it can evaporate easily). For slippers with removable insoles, dry the insoles outside the slippers. Work the leather by hand periodically while drying to help keep the slippers soft and to retain their shape.

It is simply a matter of personal preference and personal habits. Many people simply don't like a slipper with a ridged bottom (Kathy is one of them). However, if you are one of those folks who seem to run outside "just for a minute" in your slippers day in and day out you will be much happier with the durability of the crepe sole. It is a trade off. For comfort we suggest the shearling sole, for wandering out to get the mail or downstairs into the basement we suggest the crepe sole.
