The smallest amount of memory derives from the screen parameters. If you have 320x320 screen and 65000 colors (2 Bytes per pixel) then the bitmap covering the whole screen takes around 200K. So the loaded image will be in most case larger than the screen. Roughly 500K should be enough for most images. If the image needs more memory than available, then it will be downscaled.
