Meal worms are not difficult to raise. Take a plastic container about 15x17x6-inches deep with a lid, and lay in a mix of wheat bran and non-medicated chicken feed for the bedding. Add a few sliced carrots, celery, lettuce or zucchini for food and then drop in some meal worms. They will cycle through to the bug form and will lay eggs in the bedding. The eggs hatch into tiny worms that grow to adults and then the cycle repeats itself.

Live food during the winter when bugs are particularly scarce will be attractive to jays, cardinals and pine siskins. Once spring arrives, bluebirds, song sparrows and Eastern phoebes can be attracted by meal worms at your feeding station. Put them out in a single layer in a shallow dish or on a tray mounted four or five feet high

Worms can affect all types of horses whether stabled or at grass. If they are not controlled they can cause, colic, weight loss and in severe cases, death.

Nassau County Health regulations have little to say specifically about feeding birds, however there are a few related issues that we do address. The Public Health Ordinance states that no animal can be fed out in the open in a way that causes the food to be available for rodents. This means that feeding must be done in a way that will not cause health nuisances. It also means that feeding of birds is allowed if it does not create a public health concern.

Harming or trapping of birds is not permitted in Philadelphia. Only repellents or exclusion is acceptable. There are several types of repellents available form pest control companies, House & Garden Supply, etc., to discourage roosting of birds on your property. There should be no increase in the likelihood of catching worms on condition that the food is purchased from a reputable outlet or is food passed as fit for human consumption. In some areas where hydatid tapeworms occur dogs fed on sheep/kangaroo/hare or other carcasses can become infected. Dogs infected with the tapeworm are a source of infection for humans and other animals.

A10. Worms are a perfect and ideal natural live food for these animals and more. Because worms are live and fresh you cannot overfeed most animals. Worms are full of protein, with high levels of EFA oils and they are an excellent supplement in any animal's diet. Like any new food that you feed your animals, test different volumes and different mixtures to start with. Take it easy in the beginning and slowly introduce worms to your pets diet.

Generally speaking, the best down comes from larger, more mature birds. When age and maturity are equal, goose down is better than duck down. However, down from an older duck is better than down from a younger goose. Larger Down has an extraordinarily high warmth-to-weight ratio. A duvet or sleeping bag filled with this down will be very light and incredibly warm. And it will last for decades. On the other hand, poor quality White Goose Down will have smaller Down.

Don't open attached files from email messages. Some people believe they should stop feeding birds right after Labor Day because the birds’ southward migrations will be interrupted. Iceberg lettuce is mostly just water and adds very little nutrition to their diet. Romaine lettuce is a better choice. However, Iceberg lettuce is not "harmful" in and of itself. Spinach contains a high amount of oxalic acid, which depletes calcium in a birds system. However, it also contains many nutrients. Some people recommend avoiding spinach altogether. Others feed it, but only in moderation. It is only when it is eaten to excess that it causes problems.

Pesticides and herbicides all have the potential of being fatal to birds and other wildlife. It's important to work closely with your lawn service to ensure that noxious chemicals aren't applied. Think about reducing expansive lawn areas in favor of natural plantings that include bushes, wildflowers, ground covers and such that invite birds to feed and nest.

It's not the location of the report that's important, but the nature of it - posts should focus not on the repeated reports of day-to-day birds (Most of us could report cardinals and timice at our feeders every day.), but rather on unusual birds, arrival/departure dates, interesting behavior, id help, etc.

The birds that visit feeders and bird tables are very unlikely to carry the H5N1 virus. Observe sensible hygiene precautions: wash hands after handling equipment that has been splashed with bird faeces. Clean and disinfect feeders bird-tables and bird-baths regularly, using 10% disinfectant solution. Rinse out several times after treatment to ensure all the disinfectant has been removed. Water containers should be rinsed out daily during the warmer months.

Some specialist pet shops sell mealworms as live food for lizards etc. I buy mine from Field & Garden , in 1/2kg sacks. It's possible to rear your own, but it's a lengthy process

Four parts water to one part sugar (a 4:1 ratio) has been shown to be the closest to the sucrose content of natural flower nectar. Concentrations stronger than this (3:1 ratio and stronger) are readily consumed by hummingbirds, but no scientific evidence exists regarding the potential helpful or harmful effects on them.
