What does R-value and U-value mean?
EllisonWindow.comR-Value is a term that measures the insulation properties of a material. For example, fiberglass insulation is measured by its “R-Value.” The energy efficiency of windows is measured by “U-values.” Because windows are not insulators by design, they cannot be measured in “R-Values.” However, windows obviously have insulating properties, so there needs to be a measurement that allows comparison of styles and window packages.
What is R-Value and U-Value?
Denver Siding and Windows - FAQWindow efficiency and insulation is always given in terms of a U-value or an R-value. These values quantify the rate of heat loss allowing the consumer to understand the insulation value of the product. Glass types, sizes, glazings, frame materials and installation affect these values. The U-Value is simply the inverse of the R-value, so as a standard rule of thumb a window with a higher r-value and lower u-value is considered more energy efficient.
What does a U-Value and an R-value represent?
Door Installation, Window Installation, Window Replacement F...U-Value means an insulation rating for transparent objects like glass. It goes like the lower the U-Value, the better the insulation. R-value represents the resistance a material has to heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the resistance.
What is U-value and how does it relate to R-value rating?
Reasons to buy Vinyl Replacement Windows | Windows PricingR-value and U-value are reciprocal to one another. The term U-value is measured by the amount of heat that escapes a surface-a wall, ceiling, or window. R-Value is measured by insulation value. How many glass layers there are in a window to the type of gas that is between the panes of glass, are some of the basis of this measurement. The higher the R-value, the better insulated are walls and ceilings. The lower the U-value, the better job a window does in keeping out heat and cold.
Does a Radiant Barrier have an R-value?
Reflectix Inc. | Company Profile | Frequently Asked Question...No. Products with R-values reduce rates of "conductive" heat transfer and are tested for this characteristic. Radiant Barriers provide benefit by dramatically reducing "radiant" heat transfer which is just as quantifiable but not related to R-value type performance.
What does the high R-value on MAXX-R mean to me?
MAXX-R Pipe Insulation System FAQUnderground direct burial of MAXX-R is normal, but sometimes installers and homeowners have to install the system above ground - after the ground is frozen. We call this a "winter install." These installs may result in air temperatures of 20-30 degrees below zero. Having low heat loss means a warm home through the cold winter months. Note: Above ground installations require an available winter sleeve for ultraviolet protection. See the performance chart to predict your heat loss.

What does this U-xx stuff mean?
SBYSC Frequently Asked QuestionsThe U-xx stands for under xx. For example U-08 means players who were 7 or younger as of July 31st. If they turn 8 on August 1st they are still a U-08 player.
If you install 2 layers, does the R-value double?
Reflectix Inc. | Company Profile | Frequently Asked Question...No. Our products do not operate in this manner. Minimal benefit is netted when the product is doubled.
What does R-Value actually mean?
How to calculate rFoil reflective insulation and No-Tear rad...This is probably one of the most misunderstood values in construction today, and here's why. R-Value only measures an insulation's resistance to CONDUCTIVE heat, which is heat by physical contact. That's important when you are filling up a wall cavity with bulk insulation, and there's contact between the interior drywall and the exterior sheathing. But think about your attic.
What is the difference between U-factor, U-value, and R-value?
SunGuard - Specifications & Resources - FAQU-factor and U-value are interchangeable terms referring to a measure of the heat gain or loss through glass due to the difference between indoor and outdoor air temperatures. U-factor or U-value is also referred to as the overall coefficient of heat transfer. A lower U-value indicates better insulating properties. The units are Btu/(hr)(ft2)(?F). R-Value equals a measure of the resistance of the glazing to heat flow. It is determined by dividing the U-value into 1, (R-value = 1/U-value).
What is the R-value and U-value of Earth Blocks?
Earth Block Inc. - FAQThe R-value, or resistance to heat flow, is the most common used measurement for determining building material's insulating properties. The greater the R-value of a material, the better it is at resisting heat loss (or heat gain). An earth block wall has very little insulative or R-value.
How well does Solexx Insulate? What is the R-Value (R-Factor)?
Solexx Greenhouses frequently asked questionsR Value - the measurement of 'insulating ability' of the material. The higher the R Factor number the greater the insulation value. U Value - the measurement of 'heat loss' through the material. The lower the U Value the less heat is escaping.
What is the R-value for the Ytong AAC system and what do you mean by "effective" R-value?
Ecolite Masonry - FAQs about Autoclaved Aerated ConcreteEcolite Ytong AAC wall, floor and roof systems provide an innovative combination of excellent low thermal conductivity, thermal mass and low air-infiltration. This practical combination of properties in one system provides an excellent thermal insulation material and permits peak energy usage in the building to be shifted to off-peak hours, thus reducing operation cost for building users and owners, improving comfort of living and reducing the demand on power generation facilities.
How does this R-Value compare to other insulated block?
Architectural Block, Architectural Masonry Products, Masonry...Other blocks using inserts or hollow core blocks with poured insulation range between 5 and 6 for a 9 and 10" block.
What is R-value and how does it benefit me?
Overhead Door CorporationR-value is a standardized measurement of thermal efficiency. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating properties. Overhead Door manufactures insulated doors with a broad range of R-values designed to meet your needs. Our Thermacore® doors offer our highest R-values - up to 17.5.
