When the "white" of your eye is red, as when you are exhausted or your eye is irritated, this is on the surface of your eye, and is not related to the kind of hemorrhaging seen in PXE. Redness may also occur in infections. This may or may not be associated with discharge that may keep the eyes glued shut. [September 2006] These are replies to general and specific questions which have been submitted to us in the past.

Several supplements used in combination have been used in randomized clinical trials in people with age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Results of these studies have shown some benefit in individuals at high risk for vision loss, and they are safe to use. There is, however, no evidence that they are beneficial in PXE. It is possible that these supplements would be helpful.

No information is available from any randomized clinical trial that demonstrates that supplemental dietary lutein has any beneficial or detrimental effect on any retinal disease, despite many theories as to why it might be beneficial. [September 2006]

Red-eye is caused by light from your flash bouncing off of your subject's retina. So, how do you minimize it? There are several approaches: Minimize the subject's pupil size, thus reducing the amount of light that reaches the retina to be reflected back. The so-called red-eye reduction modes in many flashes and cameras today try to do precisely this by hitting the subject with a "pre-flash" of bright light designed to make the pupils constrict.

You have many options for fixing red-eye in software. Many image editing programs come with features designed to facilitate this, so check your manual. PhotoDeluxe and Photoshop Elements both have built-in features for this. Ironically, full Photoshop (this Swiss Army chain saw) does not have these features. The basic skills for red-eye removal are quite simple and can be done in a variety of ways (without using any special red-eye features) in most moderately sophisticated programs.

Red eye is a condition, which occurs when a blood vessel under the conjunctiva breaks and bleeds, this causes the sclera to turn red. This condition is also called a subconjunctival haemorrhage. For more information concerning it, please see here.

Chronic, longstanding redness of the eyes is most commonly caused by either chronic meibomitis (inflammation of the oils glands in the eye lid) or dry eye. If symptoms are worse upon awakening, and especially if the eyes are their most red upon first eye opening in the morning, the most likely cause of the redness is posterior blepharitis or meibomitis.

Small or conspicuous blood spots over the white of the eye are common. They are harmless and usually clear in a matter of days or weeks.

Many edit options or red eye reduction works on selections only. Create first a selection (outline rectangle) in the image using the left mouse button.

Due to the equipment and methods, I have yet to get red-eye in any picture I take. But if it were to happen by some fluke, of course I'd remove it.

Our designers are well trained to take care of such problems. If a photo is uploaded with red eyes or date stamps in corners or any other deformity we will try our best to remove it without changing the image in any way, and of course this is done free of charge.

There may come a time when you are editing an image of a person for a PDF or TIFF document that needs a little help. Say for example, that the person in the image has a lot of red in the eyes from the flash of the camera. Easy enough to fix simply draw a selection box as best as you can around the eyes of the person in the image. Once the selection box has been drawn the "Red eye" tool will become active.

Red eye is when the light from the flash goes into the eye of the victim , uh, I mean subject, and bounces off their retina (The "film screen" in the back of your eye). The blood vessels in the retina turn the reflected light red, which is, in turn picked up by the camera. Red-eye reduction thats built into the camera. This shines a small light, or fires a strobe at the subject that forces the subjects iris to shrink down, thereby reducing redeye.

The subject is illuminated by an incandescent lamp for 1.5 seconds before the flash fires. Unlike other systems that use flash bursts before the exposure, the EOS 100/Elan's red-eye reduction lamp is easy on the subject's eyes and less likely to cause blinking. By looking into the lamp, the subject's irises contract, reducing the red-eye effect. This should also be true for other EOS bodies with red-eye reduction capability.
