What is a heat pump? Is it better than an air conditioner?

McCullough Heating and Air Conditioning - Austin's ventilati...
In the summer, a heat pump works in exactly the same way as an air conditioner, i.e., cooling your home or office by moving heat from the inside to the outside. In the winter, a heat pump operates in “reverse”, moving heat from the outside to the inside of your home or office. Even though it feels "cold" outside during the winter, there is still plenty of heat in the air that can be captured by a heat pump.

What noise factors do I need to consider when selecting an air conditioner or heat pump?

Magic Touch Mechanical
The industry sound rating numbers are complicated and often difficult to understand. Sound rating is just one of these areas. A difference of 6 decibels (such as between 72 dB and 78 dB) is technically a four-fold increase in compressor sound when rating air conditioners or heat pump units. However, it takes a difference of 10 decibels to double the loudness. It is also noted that it takes approximately 3 decibels for the average human ear to discern any difference in loudness at all. What are the differences in Trane XB and XLi heat pump and air conditioner units?

Magic Touch Mechanical
Our XLi outdoor product lines have higher air conditioning efficiencies (SEER) ranges than the XB line. Some of the enhanced features include Trane's patented WeatherGuard™ top that provides maximum protection for the outdoor condenser coil, a compressor sound enclosure for quiet performance, a two-speed condenser fan that improves both efficiency and sound levels, and twice the original limited warranty as the XB outdoor product line. What is the difference between an Air Conditioner and a Heat Pump?

Bel Red Heating And Air Conditioning
Air conditioners work by transferring heat from inside your home to outside, effectively lowering the indoor temperature. Heat pumps work exactly the same way in the summer, but in the winter they can reverse the temperature exchange, providing one of the most efficient forms of heat available. See similar questions...

What is cooling air conditioner & heat pump?

FAQ
For a basic cooling air-conditioner, its purpose is to supply the cool air to the room. In the particular refrigeration circuit, refrigerants circulate in the equipment repeating the processes of compression, condensation, expansion and evaporation and back to compression in order to remove the warm air inside refrigerant device by using a four way valve to reverse the flow of the refrigerants. In the reversed cycle, See similar questions...

How long should my air conditioner or heat pump last?

Goettle Air Conditioning | Commercial | FAQ
If you have a system that has been properly sized for your home and you keep it properly maintained, it should last as many as 15 years with minimum problems. What is a "heat strip" in an air conditioner?

FAQ
This is a supplemental source of heat provided by a resistance element inside the A/C unit. Basically it is a strip of wire that heats up when electricity is applied. These will generally take the chill off of your pop up, but should not be counted on as your only heat source in cold climates. The only things you really need to worry about with the air conditioning unit is where the condensation water will run off to and remembering to clean the filter. See similar questions...

Can I use solar electricity to heat water or to operate my Air Conditioner?

FAQs - GEDA
It is impractical to use solar-generated electricity to heat water because a solar water heating system is a far more cost effective choice. Similarly, operating an AC is best accomplished with solar thermal strategies or equipment for the task such as passive solar home designs or transpired collectors, for example. Your savings will be specific to your circumstances. Generally, all over India there is good sunlight for at least 10 months in a year. See similar questions...

Where does the air conditioner go?

The ideal location for the air conditioner is typically a compromise. How is an air conditioning or heat pump system sized to a house?

Goettle Air Conditioning | Commercial | FAQ
The standard practice for sizing air conditioning and heat pump systems is to do what is called a heat load calculation on the structure. To do this, a manual called Manual J is used. Manual J will help the air conditioning company size the air conditioning equipment based on the outdoor design temperatures, attic and Wall insulation, window types and locations, elevation of the home, and other structural and environmental factors. What is the difference between an EE and an air-source heat pump?

ABOUT EESC
air-source system is a similar concept to an EE system, but it extracts heat from outside air instead of from the ground. Winter air does not contain much latent heat, and the efficiency of an air-source unit drops significantly when outside temperatures drop below 0oC. The compressor in an air-source unit is located in the outdoor compartment, where it is noisy and exposed to weather elements. See similar questions...
