Whats is the XviD codec?

Members Help
XviD is the name of a new open-source video codec, which just like DivX is based on the new MPEG-4 compression standard for video. It's currently being developed by people from all over the world. When you install a video codec on your system it basically works as an add-on to your system with instructions how to compress/decompress video in that video format.

Whats is a codec?

The word codec is short for compressor/decompressor. When you install a video codec on your computer, what you really are doing is giving windows media player instructions how to compress/decompress movies in that file format. If the needed codec is missing you will receive an error message that windows media player is unable to download an appropriate decompressor. For more information about this problem, see the "Common Error Messages" below. See similar questions...

Most codecs that you will come across are decoders that are geared to presenting media content to players. See similar questions...

XviD codec installation problem: Error opening file for writing, how do I fix that?

Members Help
This problem occurs when you try to install the XviD codec and the XviD installation program for some reason is unable to create/replace files in the Windows system directory. If you don't have the xvid.ax file installed on your system already the problem is most likely that you don't have the required priviliges to install the XviD codec. The installation program needs to be able to create some files in the Windows system directories as well as update the system registry. See similar questions...

Why didn't you use a standard codec like XviD, H264?

RatDVD.CA - F.A.Q.
There are three main reasons I have my own codec. First, I needed to store many of the original MPEG2 features to restore the original. Second, I had this idea that a real transcoder would be better than a decoder/encoder approach. Third, H.264 and XviD (and other standard codecs) are covered by a wide range of patents and patent pools and I wanted to keep the program completely free. See similar questions...

What is Xvid?

Xvid.org: FAQ
Xvid is a MPEG-4 video codec for PC. Its purpose is to compress video in order to allow for faster transmission over computer networks or for more efficient storage on computer disks. Hence, Xvid can somewhat be seen as a ZIP for video. Xvid removes information from video that is not important for human perception in order to achieve very high compression rates while still keeping very good visual quality. See similar questions...
