DHCP and PPPoE are alternate protocols used to assign your Lightning DSL account a public IP address. In every instance where you require access to the internet, you must be assigned an IP address to exchange information with other IP hosts. Most Lightning DSL installations use DHCP to assign addresses for a leased period. Usually, you will not need to do more than plug in your modem and set up line state, before you are assigned an address.

DHCP stands for Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol and is used to automatically configure a host during boot up on a TCP/IP network and also to change settings while the host is attached.
