It’s very difficult. K&M can try to extract paint from carpet fiber, and its technicians have been successful in doing that in some cases; however, paint is very hard to get out of carpet once it dries.

There are tools designed especially for this purpose. The Super Guide by Hyde? Tools is a metal shield that can be placed between the carpet and the baseboard allowing you to paint one section at a time. Another method is taping the carpet with masking tape or masking paper.

Regular household paint on a floor is not usually an issue, because of our unique abrasives. Zirconia cloth belts should definitely be used to remove regular household paint from a floor. The black bitumen-type paint which frequently ‘picture-frames’ floors in old houses, usually about a metre all round the edge, can be more of a challenge. However, with the zirconia abrasive, and the instructions in our book on how to get rid of it, you should get it all off.

The three EcoDepots all have a recycling drop-off point. The staff will advise if the carpet is in good enough condition to be reused (if so it can be left there for no charge) - if not you can continue through to the general refuse area where a fee will be charged to dump it. If you have carpet that is old and may not be accepted at the EcoDepot for recycling then phone the TerraNova Waste Exchange and ask if they have of people that may want old carpet as a weed mat in landscaping.
