Both degrees require 30 semester credits. However, the Masters of Engineering degree consists primarily of coursework with an advanced practicum of 2-4 credits and the Masters of Science consists of a research project or research thesis which consists of 2-9 credits. The Masters of Engineering degree also provides more flexibility in coursework a student may wish to take outside the department.

We consider computer science to be more related to software development and computer engineering to be closely connected to hardware development. Computer Science at UR is part of the College of Arts & Sciences and has core requirements that all CAS students have, including broad coursework in Humanities, Social Sciences & Natural Science in addition to the concentration requirements of math & computer courses.

BEng in Computer Engineering is a joint program offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering and the Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering. It emphasizes the design, analysis and implementation of computer systems, and bridges the gap between computer science and electronic engineering with both software and hardware applications.

There's certainly a degree of overlap between Materials and Chemical engineering...and in fact between Materials and just about all other engineering disciplines. Materials is endemic to all other engineering fields...everything has to made of a material of some kind. Chemical engineers study things like heat and mass transfer, thermodynamics and kinetics as they apply to the production of materials..

Computer Science is primarily the study of what can be accomplished by computers and how to accomplish it efficiently. In addition to learning good programming practices, students are exposed to applied areas such as robotics, databases, programming language design, and operating systems. Computer Engineering is more concerned with the design of computer hardware and circuit design.

Students who have such a broad range of interests that they are unsure which major to pick. Students who are looking for a challenging honors curriculum (many students are also members of the Schreyer Honors College). Students who are interested in an interdisciplinary field of study. Students who are good at so many things that they have not been able to eliminate choices based on things that they can not do.

A large number of our graduates continue on to the top graduate school in the US (for example: Carnegie Mellon, Cornell, Michigan, Penn State, Stanford, UC Berkeley). Others accept positions with companies such as AT&T, Bechtel Bettis, Dupont, ExxonMobil, Ford, GE, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Lucent Technologies or government agencies such as the Naval Research Lab and the US Patent Office. Still others enter medical school, law school, obtain MBAs, and/or start their own companies.

Computer Science deals with solving problems through the use of a computer while Cognitive Science deals with the understanding how the brain works and how behavior is shaped by outside stimuli. To understand the brain, you need to simulate and analyze models of the brain with the help of computers. Cognitive Science encapsulates Computer Science but not the other way around.

There is a very strong link between mineral engineering and earth sciences. The Department of Geology in the Arts and Science Faculty teach all geology courses to the mineral engineering students. Our students represent about 50% of the undergraduate group in Geology. Geology is incorporated to varying degrees in all four options.

Yale is one of the world's foremost research universities. Its faculty of outstanding scholars in the sciences, mathematics and engineering includes more than 60 members of the National Academy of Sciences. Approximately one third of Yale's entering class each year intends to major in the natural sciences, mathematics, computer science or engineering.

The Engineering Science curriculum provides much more breadth across physics and the engineering disciplines than traditional programs. This promotes communication with engineers and scientists having different backgrounds and makes them natural leaders of multidisciplinary teams. Furthermore, depth of knowledge in an area of the student’s choosing is achieved through 12 technical elective credits and the senior design project.

The line is often blurry here, but the simple answer is that an engineer is responsible for getting the sounds recorded, whereas the role of a producer will cover more of the actual shaping of the songs. Their job is to pull the best out of the project, possibly suggesting changes where necessary, and highlighting a project's strong points as well.

In short, Ocean Engineering is an engineering discipline, whereas oceanography is a science. Engineers are problem-solvers; they must assimilate numerous skills (e.g. math & physics) and resources (e.g. oceanic data) in order to solve a problem through means such as the design of a structure, vehicle or system. Oceanographers, on the other hand, are generally responsible for finding out information about the oceanic characteristics (temperatures, currents, etc.) which ocean engineers need.
