A CD-R is a recordable CD that is best suited for professional looking, small runs of CDs (under 1000) that require a quick turn (1-3 days). A CD-ROM is a read only CD that is more economically suited to larger runs, but averages 7-10 days to produce. Both CD-R duplication and CD-ROM replication is available with 4 color process. A CD-R is manufactured as a blank disc and the data is written at a later stage using your CD writer. The data is held within a special dye layer which is burned using a laser to create 'pits' and 'lands' which are read by your CD drive and converted to digital 1s and 0s. A CD-ROM is manufactured with the data already on it - the pits and lands are pressed into the polycarbonate base using a 'stamper'.

CD replication is a "mass-production" injection molding method for manufacturing the highest quality and lowest price CD copies. CD duplication is a term that typically describes "buring" or writing low-volume production runs of CD copies. The decision to burn CD-R's or to replicate CD's is dependent upon the number of discs that you want to order. If you need a small number of discs, then burning may be the right choice.

First, CD-ROM's and CD-R's function exactly the same in a drive. Basically, CD-ROM's are injection molded polycarbonate plastic with the data actually molded into the surface at the point of manufacture. Sometimes. The problem is that CD-Rs (Orange Book Part II) are "invisible" to DVD laser wavelength because the dye used in CD-Rs doesn't reflect the beam. Some first-generation DVD-ROM drives and many DVD players can't read CD-Rs. The common solution is to use two lasers at different wavelengths: one for reading DVDs and the other for reading CDs and CD-Rs.

The ROM card is replicated the same as a regular 5" CD with silk screen, litho of digital on-body print. It is not a viable option for order quantities of fewer than 500 cards. CD-R stands for Compact Disc-Recordable and can be recorded only once. You may continue to add files until the CD is full as long as the disc is not closed (write-protected). You cannot delete, rename, rearrange, or alter the files or file structure on the CD after recording. CD-RW stands for Compact Disc-Rewritable. It allows you to record the disc and then erase the entire disc and start over. You cannot select certain files to delete; you must erase the entire disc.

Yes it is! As far as the sound quality of the finished copy, it will be the same as your master! CD-R technology has rapidly developed into a huge market over the last 4 to 5 years. It has brought CD duplication down to reasonable prices for short run or small quantity jobs. Before CD-R, you didn't have a choice but to usually do a minimum of 1000 CD's. Many bands had to release their album on cassette only...OUCH!.
