Why doesn't my guitar stay in tune?

Frequently Asked Questions
To best explain the most common causes of this problem, lets follow the path of the strings. We begin at the tuners. If the they are poorly made, loose, or installed incorrectly, the strings will slip. Next, the strings can bind at the nut if the slots are cut at the wrong angle or incorrect width. Now the strings pass over the entire neck and this is where intonation is very important. If it has not been properly set, you will notice some chords sound in tune and others do not.

My guitar won't stay in tune - what can I do?

FRETS.COM FAQ
First you must determine whether your strings actually change in pitch, or whether you have intonation problems "up the neck" making it difficult to tune in the first place. Bear in mind that old strings often play out of tune, so it's wise to restring if you're in doubt. Check the harmonic over the twelfth fret, and play the fretted note in that position. They should coincide. See similar questions...

For the B string, tune up a violin A string a whole step. For the G, you can use a regular violin G. For the D, use a viola C and tune it up a step. For the A, take a viola C and tune it down a minor 3rd to A. And finally for the low E, use a violin F and tune it down a half step to E. See similar questions...

Some guitar tabs say tune guitar half a step down, what does that mean?

Stagepass.com "Frequently Asked Questions Guitar"
Answer - To tune the guitar down a half step simply means to tune every string down one fret or a flat. If your guitar is tuned standard 440 pitch E / A / D / G / B / E, a half step down would be Eb / Ab / Db / Gb / Bb / Eb. Answer - It sounds like your pots are on the way out, but it could be a build up of dirt on the internal surface parts. You can try to clean them with a contact and head cleaner that can be bought at an electronics store. If this does not work you may have to replace them. See similar questions...

Birds keep coming to visit, but then disappear. Why won't they stay?

A Bird's Home
These questions are asked by a lot of people that have put up new housing and want to become purple martin landlords, but to be honest, I can't answer them. We are dealing with wild creatures and I have no clue whether they will stay or not. They might just be passing through, or they may actually be looking for a place to set up housekeeping. If the former is the case, then they will be moving on to the site where they nested last year. See similar questions...

Ian's Shoelace Site - Frequently Asked Questions
If tied correctly, ALL the normal shoelace knots, including my Ian Knot, should stay securely tied. Most people discover that their shoelaces slip because they are, without realising it, tying an un-balanced "Granny Knot". My Slipping Shoelace Knots page shows how to find out whether you are tying a balanced knot. See similar questions...

This problem is usually due to incorrect application. The strapping should be purchased as far over the shaft on the female grommet as possible. Then insert the male grommet and tap with a hammer, not too hard, but enough to snap them together. This should resolve the problem. See similar questions...

I can't seem to be able to tune my guitar down one step like a lot of the newer bands are doing?

Stagepass.com "Frequently Asked Questions Guitar"
Answer - Don't feel bad, I've been playing for 25 years and I'm still trying to catch up to new stuff. The Floyd Rose was not designed for what you are trying to achieve because it's a floating system, that's why it's giving you a hard time (you can try blocking the bridge with a piece of wood). They do make a Floyd system that has a drop "D" tuner on it but that's as far as they go with it. See similar questions...

We have martins that come by during the day, but then disappear at night. Why won't they stay?

A Bird's Home
There could be a number of reasons for this. They could be birds visiting from another site and are enjoying your site a little more than their home site and just might be looking yours over, but site fidelity is making them return to their home site for the night. If they continue to spend days at your site and like it more, then they may just make the switch and stay. Also, if it's early in the year, they may not be ready to settle down just yet. Why won't my incense stay lit?

FAQ
First, be sure that the end of the incense stick is glowing orange before blowing out the flame. This usually does the trick. But as frustrating as it is, sometimes even the best incense refuses to stay lit. Although this is uncommon, it does happen on occasion, and is not an indication of "bad" incense. We have found that even some of our freshest incense will not stay lit. It may be that the oil used to make the incense hasn't had quite enough time to dry. See similar questions...

My Laxmi Dhoop won't stay alight... what should I do?

Answers to some frequently asked questions about incense... ...
Laxmi Dhoop is a soft incense that is based on gum benzoin... so it can tend to go out if it's not hot enough. I've found that the best way to light it, and keep it alight, is to mould one or two sticks of it into a cone shape, light the tip and allow it to flame for around 30 seconds before blowing it out. (I know that sounds like an awfully long time, but the dhoop needs that long to build up enough heat. See similar questions...
