If I did poorly in a class, should I retake it in order to improve my GPA?

University of Massachusetts Amherst - Pre-Law Advising Offic...
Usually, no, if your GPA is your only concern. When you retake a class at UMass, the Registrar's office recalculates your GPA to omit reference to your first grade. Law schools and the LSAC do not. They include every grade on your transcript in calculating your GPA. For students who retake classes, this often means that your LSAC-generated GPA is less than your UMass-generated GPA. Moreover, the law schools will look at your entire transcript, not just you GPA.

What if I have a very high GPA but do poorly on the GRE?

F.A.Q - Frequently Asked Questions
The weight given to standardized admissions exams varies from program to program and discipline to discipline. This can be particularly effective if you have taken advanced courses or done independent study with that professor.

CAN I RETAKE COURSES IN WHICH I PREVIOUSLY DID POORLY?

UC Davis School of Medicine, Postbaccalaureate Program
Generally, no. For most courses in which you have done poorly it is usually a better strategy to do well in another course in the same department/field. The exception to this is a medical school pre-requisite course. It may be advisable to retake these courses if you have failed them.
