What is the chassis dynamometer?

Hendrick's in-house chassis engineering department
A chassis dyno is different from the engine dyno. It is an instrument that gives measurements of power. The engine has a reading of amount of horsepower, but some of that power is lost when the car goes around the track. Putting the race car on the chassis dyno measures how much power is lost through the drive line, and then engineers can perfect the drive line so it is more efficient.

What is a dynamometer?

Revo Performance Tuning at Mega4
A dynamometer is a machine used to measure torque of an engine. "Dyno's" as they are typically called measure the power output of an engine. "chassis dyno's" or "rolling roads" are used to measure the power at the wheels and can calculate drivetrain loss. Contrary to popular belief dynos do not actually measure horsepower; horsepower is a mathematical function of torque. Torque is measured and horsepower is then calculated. See similar questions...

Can I make my chassis out of Aluminium?

The EDGE Products - Frequently Asked Questions
All Edge chassis & parts are made out of Mild Steel for ease of manufacture & to keep the costs reasonably cheap. But Aluminium has characteristics that make it much more difficult to work with compared to mild Steel. Without heat treating the chassis welds & the surrounding area will be soft & prone to failure. Ultimate tensile strength around 45ksi, but falls off to 24ksi when welded, heat treating will bring it back up to 45ksi. a guide aluminium would have to be 1. See similar questions...

Where are the chassis' made?

FIA Frequently Asked Questions
All chassis tubing components are cut right at the factory. Most of the sheet metal components are sublet to a CNC punch shop where tolerances are less than +/- .010". All separate components are MIG or TIG welded right in our own jigs at the factory. When you visit us, look at the high quality of the welds. Our certified welders are the best! Suspension components are done the same way. Arms are cut and jig welded right here. The GT arms are TIG welded. See similar questions...

What is the chassis made of?

DeLorean - PJ Grady Europe DeLorean - useful info
The chassis frame is made of mild steel, covered with an epoxy resin. The frames were initially made from stainless steel too, but were too expensive - so were later developed from mild steel with the epoxy coating. The frame is one of the most common parts of a DeLorean to rust or corrode, and is perhaps the most important thing to check when buying a car. PJ Grady Europe have fixed many frames that had badly corroded. Details of this can be found within the 'Repairs' section of this website. See similar questions...

What is Rotational Inertia?

Slipper Clutch FAQ
Inertia is a "resistance to a change of motion". The more inertia an object has, the less it responds to being accelerated or pushed. You are no doubt aware that, all other things being equal, that a heavier bike will accelerate down a drag strip slower than a lighter bike. The more weight or mass in an object, the less it responds to being accelerated or pushed. Rotational inertia is a resistance to change of rotation. See similar questions...

What is the thermal inertia of the system?

Valsir - Floor heating system
The thermal inertia of the system can be identified as the “speed” with which the system follows the variations in room temperature. The insulating panels allow a reduction of the thermal inertia and therefore speeds up the operation of the system. See similar questions...

What is a Marine Dynamometer?

Frequently Asked Questions
A Dynamometer is a device that provides a measurable load (force) on an engine. This International Dyno service of Marine Dynamometers provides a load for marine outboards and I/O's to closely simulate actual on-the-water operation. Dyno load measurements can be used to evaluate an engine's full throttle power and acceleration. See similar questions...

Will my mechanics use a dynamometer?

Frequently Asked Questions
Sometimes it's difficult to break old methods for testing engine load such as lake testing or water tank testing. However, an owner stressing the need for faster customer service and increased mechanic productivity can go along way in making the transition for lake testing to dyno testing. Some dealerships pay their mechanics extra if they use the dyno and avoid an lake testing situation. See similar questions...

How long will it take to complete a dynamometer test?

Frequently Asked Questions
Most dynamometer tests are actually quite short, usually two minutes or less. Of course there is set-up time to consider. An experienced mechanic can usually do the dyno test from start to finish in thirty minutes or less. Certainly much less time than a lake test, even if your dealership is located on the water. What is a dynamometer and how many does Hendrick have?

Hendrick, NASCAR's premier engine building operation
Hendrick Motorsports has four dynamometer machines or “dynos” that simulate race conditions and tests valves, oil lines, and filters. See similar questions...

Why do you bond the body to the chassis?

FIA Frequently Asked Questions
The results are a stiffer overall structure, with no rattles, creaks or shakes. Our fiberglass bodies do not get stress cracks, even after many hard miles on the road. It is a bit more work, but well worth it! Some claim that their body is "unstressed" because it is rubber mounted to the chassis . Wrong! The outside shell must still be supported with inner panels or some other structure. The method of that connection is what determines whether stress cracks will appear. See similar questions...

What's the chassis like?

untitled
All Rush chassis are a fully-triangulated steel spaceframe. The chassis tubes are a mixture of round and square mild steel tubing with welded joints. Integral rollover bars can be made from stainless steel or you can choose the racing-specs rollover bars which are made of CDS (cold-drawn seamless tubing) steel. Chassis come in standard and long-cockpit options. See also interior space. You need to try it though, to see if you fit comfortably. See similar questions...

Where would I get a chassis for my trailer?

The Squidget Photo Gallery
I made my own 5' x 9' chassis from locally purchased steel and axle. My axle is a Dexter Torflex torsions axle for a softer suspension, although a spring axle can be used. A ready-made 5' x 8' chassis could be modified to 9' long, although the axle placement might have to be moved to achieve the correct tongue weight. Having a trailer made by a local manufacturer to my specs is an option. Finding an old trailer that can be purchased cheaply and stripped down to the frame is another option.
