Do I need to know how to fly and airplane first?

Radio Control Helicopter FAQ's
Definitely not! As a matter of fact, there are techniques used in flying an airplane that can hinder the helicopter learning process. Some of my best students have little or no aircraft experience. Use of the basic airplane instinctive reactions without the correct thought process can be detrimental when flying a helicopter.

Do I have to own an airplane to fly?

AirSports Aviation
A large part of general aviation flying is done in airplanes that pilots rent at their local airport. Rental fees are normally computed on the basis of specified dollar amount per hour. The fee normally covers everything, including fuel, oil and insurance on the airplane. Aircraft leasing is also a popular method of flying without buying, especially by business organizations. There are tax advantages to buying your own airplane and then leasing it to a flying club. See similar questions...

Question: Do I really need ailerons to fly an airplane?

Model Airplane FAQ
Rudder only control works well with a di or poly hydral wing. Turning a straight wing design is hard to do with rudder only. A straight wing is less stable, it does not automatically level like a poly. On the other hand a straight wing gives much better performance. So, a high performance design will have straight wings and need ailerons. I agree that in many conditions a non-aileron glider can perform thermal turns well. See similar questions...

Building an airplane and flying one have little or no relationship to each other. Please remember this. You must ask yourself, "What do I REALLY want to do". Are you a builder or a flyer or both? Many people are drawn to the Mini-IMP because the sleek appearance appeals to their fantasy of being a fighter pilot. This is all well and good, but is not the best motivation to be able keep to the long-term task of building an airplane. See similar questions...

Q208: I fly regular aircraft so why should I need any training to fly these simple machines?

Ultralight FAQ

They have much less mass and inertia and thus do not retain airspeed as long as other aircraft. Control response time is often quicker so the regular pilot may tend to flare for the landing much to early. Also, headwinds and crosswinds have a much greater effect and can more easily spoil your navigation and use up all your fuel. See similar questions...
