Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a serious disorder that affects the skin and mucous membranes. The most common indication of the disease is the appearance of blisters and lesions on the skin.

Scientists have not determined an exact cause of the disorder although it has recently been linked to several prescription drugs and over the counter medications. SJS has been linked to ibuprofen, amoxicillin, tetracycline, and, most recently, to Children's Motrin and Bextra. The medications can cause an allergic drug reaction resulting in SJS.

For the milder symptoms, topical creams and antihistamines can help control the itching and burning of blisters and rashes. Also, patients with swelling in the mouth, nose and throat can use anesthetics to reduce inflammation that causes discomfort when eating and drinking. Prescribed medications can also help reduce the "pink eye" and other ocular inflammation. For patients with severe SJS, hospitalization may be required to control the disease, prevent infection and manage pain.

Some children who have taken the over the counter ibuprofen Children's Motrin have developed serious cases of Stevens Johnson syndrome. This disease can be very serious for a child, resulting in blindness and death. After hearing of the severe cases and being urged by a group petition, the FDA withdrew the product from the shelves.

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a condition suffered buy one in five people. The symptoms of IBS can be mild, but more severe symptoms can limit your ability to function normally. Abdominal pain after eating and irregular bowel habits are the most common symptoms. Treatments are designed to relieve the symptoms and a colon cleanse can help during periods of constipation.

Carcinoid syndrome requires one or more of the following for laboratory confirmation of the diagnosis: increased blood serotonin with decreased blood tryptophan, increased chromogranin A and increased urine 5HIAA or indole-3-acetic acid . In spite of the symptoms, if these criteria are not present, carcinoid syndrome is not the diagnosis.

Each individual may experience symptoms differently. Besides high fluid pressure in the skull, which occurs in about 10 percent of patients, another symptom is a chronically runny nose. Andersen-Tawil Syndrome (ATS) is a rare inherited disorder which causes episodes of paralysis or weakness. It was only recognized as a separate disorder in 1971. ATS causes attacks of muscle weakness and irregular heart rhythms. Patients may experience brief episodes of localized weakness in a hand, foot, jaw or limbs or they may experience generalized paralysis. The episodes of weakness often occur during rest after exercise, and they may occur on awakening in the morning.
