Disk space: GMT contains some 100,000 lines of code. On a Linux workstation the executables take up about 15-50 Mb depending on use of shared libraries. In addition there are support data such as GSHHS coastlines, rivers, and political boundaries. The default distribution of these data includes intermediate, low and crude resolution versions which together takes up another 5 Mb of space. These are sufficient for most regional map applications.

You can probably cram the basics (i.e. base and etc distribution sets) into 80 MB or less, but here are some words of wisdom from Bill Studenmund (wrstuden@loki.stanford.edu): 100 meg would get you going for a root partition, but depending upon the toys, you'll want more. This depends upon the nature of your program. X11 applications typically need more disk space than a daemon or a character-based application. At the moment, there are no quotas. This *does not mean*, however, that you can use hundreds of megabytes of disk space. Remember that you are sharing the same disk with many other grad students. Please be courteous. To find out how much space you are using, type "du -s" (no quotes) in your home directory. The number that is returned is in kilobytes.
