Frequently Asked Questions

My pond is 20 feet deep. Does that mean I can stock lots of fish in it?

FAQ's
Typically, the number of pounds of fish a body of water can support is a function of the surface acreage, rather than the volume. Volume can help or hurt, depending upon the availability of oxygen in the entire water body. Aeration is a good idea in such situations.

How deep does my pond have to be?

Burns Water Gardens - Pond FAQ
It depends on where you are and if you need to be able to keep fish over the winter in it. At minimum, without considering fish, your pond should be 2 feet deep. A pond that is shallower will heat up excessively, encouraging algae growth. We generally recommend you plan to keep your fish in the pond over the winter, they survive better outside than inside once they are about two years old.

I have a bass pond but would like to fish for crappie too. Can I stock crappie in this pond?

FAQs.htm
Crappie are not usually recommended in bass ponds under 100 surface acres. A prolific spawner, crappie in small bodies of water will usually compete directly with bass for food and produce not only slow-growing crappie but slow-growing bass as well. They are also known to reduce small bass survival by preying directly on young bass. You may know of a pond with both good size bass and crappie, but these are rare.

I'd like to stock koi in my fish pond. Is this a good idea?

FAQ's
Usually not. Koi will spawn and they could upset the balance of the pond. But the biggest problem in earthen ponds is that adult koi will dig along the shoreline and undermine the edges of the pond. Large koi also tend to increase the turbidity of the pond.

Is 20 feet wide enough for bioenergy crops as streamside buffers?

Bioenergy and Biomass Frequently Asked Questions
Probably not. While there may be benefits to soil and water quality from establishing buffer strips 20' (6 m) wide, 50 to 100' strips (15-30 m) could provide greater benefits for water quality and stream temperature protection, because of the increased cover and area for filtering of nutrients and sediment before run-off water reaches the stream.

Fish? You mean I can really toss my dog a whole fish?

BARF for Beginners - Most Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely...head, tail, body...the whole thing! Just be sure to check inside the fish for any hook that may have been forgotten to be removed. Fish is not a substitute for an RMB meal, but it can be fed a couple of times a week. One reason for this is the thiaminase enzyme in fish...it destroys thimaine (Vitamin B1). Fish especially rich in thiaminase are herring, capelin, suckers, smelts and various carp species, a total of some 50 species, most of which live in fresh water.

Why does the Fish and Wildlife Service stock non-native fish?

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service-Garrison Dam National Fish Hatc...
The habitat that exists in Lake Sakakawea was not found in the old Missouri River system. Consequently, the fish that are native to the river have not adapted to these conditions. Fish species more suited to the lake were introduced from the Hatchery to fill the niche. Chinook salmon, trout, and smallmouth bass provide anglers with unique fishing opportunities. Without the reservoirs, these species wouldn't exist in the Missouri River.

Fish have been disappearing from my pond. Is an opossum responsible?

The 'Possum Pages: FAQs
Not likely. Opossums are rather lazy and will always seek out readily available food whenever possible. It is not generally industrious enough to catch fish or try to attack an animal that might fight back. The disappearance of fish or chickens is more likely due to a racoon, fox, or badger. If you see an opossum eating your fish, most likely it came across the remains that another creature left behind on the bank.

Is the pond on the property stocked with fish?

Cabin in Hidden Hills, Lake Lure, North Carolina. Blue Ridge...
It's just a few minutes away. Hidden Hills is clearly visible from Chimney Rock (and vice-versa.) Besides the fantastic view, there are also nice hiking trails up there. Getting to the top is a 26-story elevator ride. We can sure relate to that one. When we get a chance to stay at the cabin we tend to stay on the property most of the time. It's a great place to forget the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Can I put fish and snails in a pond?

Water Features Waterfall, Ponds, Cascades, Creeks, Rocks, Ed...
Yes. Fish and snails play a vital part in maintaining cleanliness of a pond. The fish will eat the mosquito larvae and the snails are extremely good at cleaning the pond sides. Both these animals can be destructive if they breed to excess or grow too large. They can then start eating the plant life, which will cause the water to become dirty quickly.
