R-22 is the common name for hydro-chlorofluorocarbon (HCFC). R-22 has been used as a refrigerant by HVAC manufacturers for over 40 years, but studies in the past decade have shown that HCFCs contain chlorine, an ozone-depleting agent. For this reason, the United States Clean Air Act has set a target date for January 1, 2010, on which HVAC manufacturers must cease the production of products that use R-22.

Yes. The Clean Air Act of 1990 mandated a complete phase-out of R-22 and in 1996 a production cap was placed on its production. In 2004 production of R-22 was cut by 25% and the manufacture of R-22 compatible equipment will be prohibited after 2010. Production of R-22 will be banned completely in 2020. The replacement is a much more environmentally friendly chemical, R-410A. During the summer months, set your thermostat back during the day when you are not at home.

The Environmental Protection Association (EPA) is calling for a cease in production of all products that use HCFC refrigerants, such as R-22, by the year 2010. However, the eventual phase out of R-22 is not scheduled to occur until the year 2020.

Both Puron and Suva 410A are marketing brands for ASHRAE R-410A refrigerant. Puron is Carrier Corporation's brand name and Suva 410A is the DuPont brand for R-410A. Both have the same chemical composition and can be used interchangeably.

R-22. It is anticipated that as the use of R-410A becomes more common, the cost will become more affordable.

The reason that freon is regulated is that the chlorine it contains can destroy the ozone layer. This ozone layer protects us from the UV radiation that can cause skin cancer and effects our immune system. To obtain the latest boating information, be sure to also check with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

All items containing Freon, (refrigerator, air conditioners, freezers) must have the Freon removed by a certified technician. The necessary forms are available from the Town Clerk and must be returned to Modern Disposal to arrange for pickup.

A conforming mortgage is one that does not exceed the maximum mortgage limit of the two primary GSE's (Government Sponsored Enterprises), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The current conforming maximums are: $333,700 for a 1 unit property, $427,150 for a 2 unit property, $516,300 for a 3 unit property and $641,650 for a 4 unit property. These maximums apply to all states except Alaska and Hawaii. Therefore a jumbo mortgage is one that has a mortgage amount exceeding the aforementioned limits.

Contrary to what you might have been told, R-22 is not a product that will be phased out anytime soon. The federal law schedule has R-22 to be phased out as follows: Because the life of a standard comfort system is 15 years, purchasing a unit with R-22 would be well within the time and availability of R-22 refrigerant.

Crytec does not use HCFC (hydrochlorofluorocarbon), like R-22 Freon®, as a refrigerant, but charges all its Bubble Slurry™ Ice machines with the HFC (hydrofluorocarbon) R-507, like Forane® or Klea®

The safety and toxicity characteristics of R-410A have been thoroughly studied by reputable companies and organizations around the world. They have concluded that R-410A can be handled safely when the proper protective equipment is used and when appropriate safety guidelines are followed. These safety practices are very similar to the practices that have been used with R-22 and other HFC and HCFC refrigerants. There is more information on this in the R-410A manual.

Trade the old one in when buying a new one or sale or give away to a used appliance shop. The freon must be removed by a certified technician properly licensed, trained and equipped to capture the freon. Possible $25,000 dollar fine for illegally disposing of freon. Used appliance shops can usually help or call 467-4262.

Freon" is a trade name for CFC and HCFC refrigerants used by DuPont. Other trade names include Allied-Signal's "Genetron" and ICI's "Arcton". Various companies sell the same CFCs, HCFCs, HFCs, and other products under different names. The most common ozone-depleting refrigerants are CFC-12, R-502, and HCFC-22. Our R-22 kit which contains 1 16 ounce can of Cryo-Silane® sealant and 1 16 ounce can of Dry-Pak® dehydrant will be sufficient to seal about 18 pounds of system. Systems larger than 18 pounds will use additional product proportionately. Please note: Cryo-Silane® will not seal leaks larger 1 pound, per leak, per day. The small concentration of active sealant material Cryo-Silane® is miscible in the refrigerant and is dispersed throughout the system.
