Windows Media Player will only store your audio files as compressed WMA files or MP3 files. So if you were to record AIFF or WAV files to a compact disc and then store them into your Windows Media Player library it will automatically store your file as a compressed WMA file or MP3. If you must use the Windows Media Player please update to the very latest version, the latest version (v. 11) is said to have WAV file ripping capabilities.

You need to have the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack or Real Alternative installed. The 'RealMedia DirectShow filter' and 'RealMedia codecs' that come with these two packages are required.

To play DVDs in Windows Media Player (version 9, 10 or 11) you need a MPEG-2 decoder that is capable of decoding DVD video and is also compatible with WMP. The K-Lite Codec Pack contains a compatible decoder. Some examples of compatible decoders are: Cyberlink, DScaler5, InterVideo, MainConcept and nVidia PureVideo. There are two types of MPEG video, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2. The most common one of these two that is used in .mpg/.mpeg files is MPEG-1.

You can make Windows Media Player the default player for a number of file types (formats). You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to change the file types that the Player will play by default. The procedure varies depending on which version of the Player you are running. For Windows XP, your AutoPlay settings may affect your Windows Media Player file types settings. Even if you do have a 56k modem, there may be times when network congestion causes an occasional pause, and 'buffering' of data. Unless you have a Broadband connection, viewing other web pages while listening is also likely to cause interruptions.

When the BBC began publishing audio and video content Real Media was the most secure form of streaming. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports Real content. Consequently, many of the later versions of the Windows Media Player will not play our clips. This may change in the future.

WMVHD files, typically created for playback on the XBOX360, can contain a 5.1 audio stream. If you play such a file on a computer that only has two speakers then you will only hear the sound from two of the six channels. This causes for example the voices (center channel) to be almost unhearable. The solution is to downmix the 5.1 channels into 2 channels. There are two ways to do this. You can either use AC3Filter or ffdshow. In ffdshow audio decoder configuration, go to the 'Codecs' page.

Open the Windows Explorer, click on "Tools / Folder Options" and then on the tab "File Types". You have to change the associated application for the file types "PLS" and "M3U" (these are the file extensions for playlist files).
