Molds can only be positively identified with a microscope. Bluish-green to green molds are usually Penicillium or Aspergillus. Black to brown-black molds can be Aspergillus niger , Alternaria alternata, Cladosporium herbarum, Cladosporium sphaerospermum, or Stachybotrys chartarum (a highly toxic mold). Reddish or pink molds are usually species of Fusarium.

Mold can be found in several places in the home environment. It appears most often in moist or wet areas. A musty odor may also be present. Mold begins to grow indoors when mold spores land on surfaces that are wet or damp. Mold will not grow without water or moisture. Therefore, it is important to dry out wet or moist areas within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth.

The mold cleanup is finished when there is no visible mold remaining and there is no dust or dirt remaining that could contain large amounts of mold and mold spores. Routine clearance testing for mold is not necessary. Leaving a few mold spores behind is not a problem if the underlying moisture problem has been corrected. Remember that mold spores are virtually everywhere. Even if all mold and mold spores are removed as part of the cleanup, spores from outside will re-enter that space.

If casting into a silicone rubber mold, it is usually not necessary to use a mold release because of it's natural no-stick tendencies. If in doubt, Alumilite offers a Stoner Urethane Mold Release that will not only help release your part but will also extend the life of your mold. If you are pouring into molds that are not made of silicone, a thick layer paste wax or Stoner is required. If you use a mold release, you may need to wash your parts prior to painting in order for the paint to stick.

A fungus problem usually starts with an injury or harsh chemicals under the nail plate at the free edge, creating a pocket in which the fungus can develop. It grows through the nail, turning black/green when reaching the top. Filing will not kill it, This type of problem must be looked at by a doctor. Yeast is perhaps the most common. The free edge pulls away from the plate, and if not checked can continue to the matrix area. Mold can happen anywhere moisture collects.

Anything can mold as long as there is moisture or a food source. Carpet, including those made of natural fibers such as wool, that is kept clean and dry shouldn’t have a mold problem.
