Max Fighter always starts in the same mode that was active when you left the game last time. Switching to fullscreen mode and not switching back should make it start that way again next time.

Press Alt+Enter to toggle between fullscreen and windowed mode. If you want the emulator to open up in fullscreen mode, use the -f commandline switch (check this section of the FAQ if you're not sure how to do that).

The context menu and most of the keyboard shortcuts do not work in Direct3D mode. The only way to exit Direct3D fullscreen is to press Ctrl+C. This will also stop playback. Media Player Classic does not properly support these file types. Use Windows Media Player for these files.

This is a known problem. Some JVM react badly to been switch from/to fullscreen mode. We have had problems with both Sun's and Apple's Java 1.4.2. However, Java 5.0 seems to be perfectly stable.
