The compiler's performance is dependent on the performance of the JVM it is running on, so the faster a JVM you can find to run it on, the shorter your compile times will be. If the JVM takes about 15MB (say) in overhead, and a program takes 3MB, then starting up a fresh JVM for each program is slow and wasteful. If you get a Java Error stating that Java does not meet the minimum requirements and you are using Netscape 7.1 or 7.2 and have Java version 142_06 or 151_01 installed, it could be because you also have Java version 141_02 installed. Netscape does not appear to recognize later versions of Java when 141_02 is installed as well. The easiest work around is to use another browser.
