Do not force belt over sheave grooves. Slack off drive for easy mounting of belt. Align and adjust drive so that belt operates free and clear of all obstructions. Belt tension is highly important. When in operation both tight and slack strands of. the belt should be in a straight line from sheave to sheave, and with no sag or bow. Check belt tension after eight hours operation, followed by periodic inspections to be sure belt is under sufficient tension and that belt is not slipping.

Opinions differ on this topic, but here's mine... I belive that the tension should be high enough to keep the blades from shifting their lead/lag angles at low rotor speeds (e.g. autorotations), but not so high as to put excessive stress on the blade grip and blade bolt, nor so high as to keep the blades from finding their proper lead/lag positions. Try holding the helicopter with the nose pointing straight up and the blades sticking out sidewise.

Initially, adjust the straps so that the springs are set to at least half compression. This will keep the cover tight and aid in draining. The springs should be checked periodically and the straps adjusted to maintain this tension.

Make sure that bobbin case and spring are clean before beginning this procedure. This is to ensure consistency once proper tension is set. Pull bobbin from under hole of tension spring. If bobbin case has a middle thread guide or pigtail, do not thread through at this time. Hold the bobbin by the thread hanging out of the case to check the tension. The ideal tension should be when the bobbin does not move, or is very slow releasing thread.

The mirror sling has two purposes. The first is to prevent the mirror from rotating, which would shift the triangles from being centered over the collimation bolts. The second is to lift the mirror up off the lower two cell posts. The self-tensioner on '87 and later 944, S, Turbo and S2 allows accurate tensioning of the timing belt without tool P9201. The assembly achieves this by means of a spring whose preload is fixed to create the proper tension while the engine is cold. Loosening the correct bolts frees the spring up to do this task before retightening. The entire job is done from above the engine. You gain access to the belts by removing various things depending on which 944 variant you have.

Your chain tension is set correctly is when the chain is as tight as possible, but still moves freely around the guide bar. To check your chain tension be sure that your bar and chain are lubricated with bar & chain oil. Then, wearing gloves or using a rag to protect your hands, grab the chain on the top rail midpoint of the bar and the bottom rail midpoint of the bar. Aggressively pull the chain back and forth several times to be sure it is seated properly.

If excessive slack exists, adjust cable tension by removing the pulley bolts and moving one or both pulleys to the inner mounting position in the dual floating pulley bracket and then reinstalling the pulley bolts.
