Features of the zebrafish strongly favor studying embryology and collecting and analyzing mutations and comparing them to other vertebrates. There are invertebrates that are equally or better suited for these types of studies, but they have very different anatomy patterns of development. These and other approaches allow a problem to be studied from many different experimental points of view, resulting in a better understanding of it.

In the early 1970's, a scientist at the University of Oregon by the name of Dr. George Streisinger determined that the zebrafish is a wonderful model for studying vertebrate development and genetics. Since he began using them in his research, zebrafish embryos have become very popular worldwide as a means of understanding how not only fish, but all vertebrates including people, develop from the moment that sperm fertilizes an egg.

We can't do research on humans so we find models that mimic the human, do the research using zebrafish, and then try to figure out how to extrapolate the data to humans... not an easy task. We are really never sure how exactly the data will match what we would have found if we use humans. Now that we know the genome of the human and are working on many other organisms, that process is getting easier.

Design of genetic techniques for careful mis-expression studies (mis-expression is another important way of learning what a protein can do) Future innovations cannot be predicted, but being able to engineer mutations in specific genes would be very useful. Many people would like to do this.

Here is a non-comprehensive and growing list of medical research endeavors that we currently support. This list can change as the researcher’s needs determine.

Zebrafish are vertebrates. Like humans, they have a backbone. This means that they are more closely related to humans than commonly used invertebrate models such as insects and worms (Drosophilia - fruit flies and Caenorhabditis elegans - nematodes) which do not have backbones. Because zebrafish are more closely related to humans, they are more likely to be similar to them in many biological traits than a more distantly related organism.

Organophosphate and carbamate insecticides are the most common type of insecticide used on crops and in the home. Most pesticide poisonings result from exposure to organophosphate insecticides. Organophosphate and carbamate insecticides affect the nervous system of people. Exposure to toxic amounts can cause adverse effects ranging from shortness of breath, excessive salivation, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness and chest discomfort to convulsions, paralysis and even death.

Although providing broad coverage, major medical insurance plans typically contain a number of exclusions.

A whole range. Probably the stereotypical notion is what's known as young earth creationism, a view that says one can from scripture perhaps calculate how old the earth is and come to a conclusion that says six to ten thousand years. Other creationists say well, we can accept something much more along scientific lines, you can interpret scripture to allow geological time. So those would be older creationists.

Different breeders use different methods. We are providing 2 methods below. Method #1 is the preferred method of the people at the University of Oregon's zebrafish facility. Method #2 is the one recommended by a high school science teacher who has successfully bred zebrafish for his science classes' breeding program. Method #1: One afternoon, put several egg-bearing females and a larger number of male zebrafish into a bare tank... no gravel.

The three most common types of interfering understory vegetation found in Pennsylvania are ferns, beech brush, and striped maple. SSI’s researchers focus on two types of chemicals: those that cause mammary tumors in animals and those that disrupt hormones. In particular, SSI’s scientists study chemicals in the environment that mimic estrogen; natural estrogen is a well-established breast cancer risk factor, therefore, synthetic chemicals that act like estrogen when in our bodies are potential sources of increased risk of breast cancer.

There are many techniques that a researcher may use to gather your opinions and experiences. You may be invited to participate in focus group discussions with other people (typically 4-8); you may be interviewed in person, or on the telephone; be asked to complete a paper questionnaire or an online survey; trial an existing or new product; watch a television pilot or preview a movie.

The PBCC is not a research facility. Our activities and programs are geared toward education, outreach and advocacy. However, we do support breast cancer research wholeheartedly through our Stepping Stone grant, Potamkin grant, and the Income Tax Check-Off program grants, which are all awarded to cancer researchers. return to top

The National Eye Institute (NEI) is the Federal government's lead agency for vision research. The NEI is supporting a number of research studies both in the laboratory and with patients to learn more about the cause of AMD. This research should provide better ways to detect, treat, and prevent vision loss in people with the disease. There is some suggestion that certain vitamins and minerals may play a role in the treatment of AMD.
