For foreign applications, we require a TOEFL score of 600. While your GRE score is important, we have no specific cut-off for GRE scores, and consider the GRE score to be just one part of your overall application. All applicants must submit a GRE score to be considered for fellowships or graduate teaching assistantships.

If your GRE scores are less than 5 years old, they are still acceptable. If your GRE scores are 5 years old or older, you must retake the GRE. Be sure to specifically request that ETS Submit the GRE scores to UC Davis ELECTRONICALLY ONLY. A photo copy or paper version of the scores is not acceptable.

If you are applying to any of the dual degree programmes, MIT requires that GRE scores be sent directly to the host department by ETS. For the non-dual degree programmes, you may submit the scores together your application materials to the SMA Office. The GRE should be taken early enough for the score to be sent to MIT by the application deadline.

You should plan to take the tests allowing enough time for the official scores to arrive before the Field deadline; generally this process takes 3-4 weeks; however, it is recommended that the tests be taken no later than October due to the large volume of testing that occurs after that time.

The policy of the Educational Testing Service (ETS) is to maintain GRE scores for a 5 year period only -- after the 5 years, the scores are purged from the ETS computer system. Therefore, if your scores are older than five years, you must discuss with us whether you should retake the test.

IELTS result is the most conclusive evidence that DIMIA will accept as proof of your English language proficiency. Other exam/test scores may be accepted at the discretion of the case officer. The Test of English as a Foreign Language is required of all international applicants who received their undergraduate degree at a university or college in a country where English is not the official language. However, if at the time of application, you have already completed at least one year of full-time academic course work with grades of B or better at a U.S. university, you do not need to take the TOEFL. Yes, we can accept a copy of the score reports for the initial review of the file. The reports can be faxed, mailed, or scanned and emailed to dgs@cheme.cornell.edu. If you are accepted into the program, you will have plenty of time to provide official scores to us.

First we look at the applications on their individual merit. We look at all of the materials and try to arrive at an accurate portrait of the applicant that includes experience, the breadth of previous coursework and recommendations. We do see scores and GPAs in all ranges. In general, however, competitive GRE scores will be in the 600s for the verbal section, in the 600s for the quantitative section, and 5 or above (on a 6-point scale) for the writing section.
