First, there's an investment in hardware and wiring. You need to have N motes attached to an N-port serial multiplexor (or a computer with N serial ports). All the motes need to be wired for power as well. This part can be time-consuming and expensive. Our 55-mote ceiling array cost on the order of $10,000, not including the costs of the motes themselves. This is just the cost of the serial multiplexors, cabling, and our custom serial and daisy-chained power board.
