Yes. Your vehicle must have a current Colorado registration to operate in the National Forest. Permit information can be obtained at Colorado State Parks.

You can take the machines that you rent anywhere that you desire, as long as you return by the time your rental is due. We suggest you stay on established trails and pack out what you take in.

The Orford Town Clerk and Lebanon DMV substation register boats (boat registration application form). Boat renewals may be done via mail directly with the DMV Boat Desk. The Lyme Country Store registers ATV's and snowmobiles. In order to register these, you must present the supporting documents (old registrations, paperwork from the state or purchase documents) to an authorized agent. We always review the proper operating and safety procedures with all riders. We will recommend riding areas that fit your level of riding experience. Both ATVs and snowmobiles have essentially automatic transmissions making them easy to drive.

For a renewal just bring the old registration. For a new registration, when purchased from a dealer, the green sales tax form and Maine assigned numbers for used recreation vehicles. If it was bought in a private sale you will need, the bill of sale, Maine assigned number, serial numbers and horsepower and length for boats. Sales tax of 5% is collected on private sales.

Boat registrations are due every three years and can be renewed from January 4th thru April 30th. There is a $5.00 penalty after April 30th. Snowmobile & ATV registrations are due every year on December 31st. There is a $5.00 penalty after December 31st.

Your Massachusetts ATV or snowmobile registration is only valid in Massachusetts. You must register in any other state you decide to ride in.

A handful of new US routes have been created recently. Some of these are out of the original numbering system and appear to use a new numbering system based on a multiple of 12.5 (in other words 437 may be next). US 412 is a NHS/ISTEA High Priority Corridor, and was designated in 1982 (see http://www.aaroads.com/high-priority/corr08.html ). It might become a future Interstate.

Routes are based on best available due to traffic, road conditions or accidents. PCH is the most common route taken.

The current AASHTO policy on U.S. highways says routes with directional suffixes and single state US routes should be renumbered or decommissioned. However, the locals and traveling public are used to the existing signage, and would be confused if such renumberings took place. Prior to the US-numbered routes, many states had already established state route systems. With the advent of US routes, most following existing state routes, most states removed the original state route numbers at some time, but AL, FL, GA, and TN kept them in their records for maintenance purposes. Most are unposted outside GA, although a few errors get out. GA, however, posts them consistently. AL, FL, and GA also give maintenance numbers to the Interstates (GA's are in the 400s).

Summer routes are not marked. In the winter, suggested routes are only intermittently marked with blue diamonds, except within Wilderness Areas where they are intermittently marked with tree blazes. From one trail marker, the next marker is usually not visible, so route finding may be the most important skill you'll need for a successful trip. Many alternate routes also access the huts - these are usually unmarked and are not designated on 10th Mountain brochures or official maps.
