There are two basic formats of television signal. In the UK and Europe (and Japan) the standard is called 'PAL', yet in America the standard format is 'NTSC'. DVD discs can be encoded in either of these two formats, and this should not be confused with Region Coding as this is something completely different. In almost all cases, NTSC discs can be played within the UK and Europe without any problems.

These are two different TV picture standards. Region 2 (Europe) uses the PAL standard whereas region 1 (USA and Canada) uses the NTSC standard. These standards are incompatible with one another and to be able to view a region 1 DVD on a UK TV, you'll need to have an NTSC compatible or multi-standard TV.

First check you have a European model PowerShot A5. Switch it to [PLAY] mode, then once the image is displayed press the [SET] and [JUMP] keys together. This takes you to the language selection menu and if you see ten languages listed you have a European PowerShot A5 with PAL only video output. If you see five languages listed including Japanese then you have a Japanese/USA model with NTSC video output.

This question is particularly important when buying VHS tapes. If you live in North America or Japan, your VCR is (most likely) set up to only play NTSC VHS tapes. If you live in Europe or Australia, your VCR is (most likely) set up to only play PAL VHS tapes. It depends, where you are going to use you camcorder. If you are planning to move or work overseas, buying a PAL camcorder would be the best solution. PAL camcorders are compatibile with most TVs and VCRs overseas that also operate on PAL system. If you are planning to work within U.S., getting NTSC camcorder is better choice for you, due to the broadcast standard used in United States - NTSC. When purchasing a camcorder, you have to remember that since U.S.

We normally produce PAL DVDs, as they are both the Australian and International standard, and produce the highest quality output (625 lines of resolution instead of 525). However, these will not work in the USA or Canada. We can also produce NTSC DVDs for the USA and Canada upon request.

We can do either. If you wish for your DVD to play in PAL TV's, the Authoring process and format must be in PAL in order to play on the PAL formatted Televisions/players.

The video tape we use is the VHS type. It comes in three colours system formats PAL, NTSC and SECAM. PAL has only 25 frames/sec and high definition frames. NTSC has 30 frames/sec but slightly less definition on each frame.

From a hardware point of view there is. A consumer CD-i player is localized for a specific broadcast system. The output signal of the video connectors is according to this local system. You can tell which broadcast system is used by looking at the version indication after the normal type ID (refer to What does the /00, /20, etc. after the type-indication mean?).
