Which partition should I use?

In Linux disks are named hda, hdb for the first two disk on the first IDE controller and hdc, hdd for the third and fourth disks. SCSI disks are named sda, sdb, etc, in the order they are discovered.

What tool do you use to partition the hard drive(s), and what partition scheme do you use?

Los Alamos Computers: High-Performance Linux Computing
We always use the Linux program fdisk or sfdisk to partition a new hard drive - even for making DOS FAT32 partitions or HPFS/NTFS partitions. The scheme we use depends entirely upon how large the hard drive is, what OS(s) we are installing, how you intend to use the machine, and of course your preferences. After reviewing the hardware in your order, we will make a recommendation allowing for smooth upgrades in the future (keeping your personal files and non-OS software in place).

Do I need to have a DOS partition on my system to use Wine?

Wine HQ - Wine FAQ
You do not need a licensed and installed copy of DOS or MS Windows to install, configure or run Wine. However, Wine has to be able to 'see' an MS Windows binary (i.e. application) if it is to run it.

How can I access a NTFS partition?

DOS FAQ by Christoph Fuchs
If you want to read the files on your NTFS partiton (used by Windows NT or Windows 2000), I suggest to use this driver: http://www.drdos.net/files/ntfsdos.exe. A few people told me that they had problems using this driver with DR DOS (look at Lineo DR-DOS (4.4) for more detailed information).

What are the recommendations about partition types - should I use the convert to NTFS option?

Managed Windows Service (MWS) Installation - Computing Servi...
CSD do not recommend either partition type as being correct in all cases. Which partition type you want depends on your requirements. The following points may be useful in determining whether you want to stay with FAT32 or convert to NTFS. Somewhat more efficient than FAT32 in many operations (however, it has extra work to do in maintaining the security information which cancels out some of the efficiency improvements). Not supported for installation into.

Do you wish to use the maximum available size for primary DOS partition?

RAID Server Data Recovery
After you receive this message, use one of the following methods, depending on the file system that you selected. If you press Y for the FAT32 file system (in step 2) and you want all of the space on the hard disk to be assigned to drive C, press Y, and then press ENTER. If you press N for the FAT16 file system (in step 2), you can accept the default 2 GB size for the partition size, or you can customize the size of the partition.

What partition scheme will you use for the hard drive(s) in my new computer?

Los Alamos Computers: High-Performance Linux Computing
We will partition your hard drives however you want. Upon receiving your order, we will review the hardware and operating choices in your system and make a recommendation for your approval or modification. It doesn't look like my swap partition is in use, how come?

Mini_HOWTO: Multi Disk System Tuning -->
It is possible that it has not been necessary to swap out, especially if you have plenty of RAM. Check your log files to see if you ran out of memory at one point or another, in that case your swap space should have been put to use. If not it is possible that either the swap partition was not assigned the right number, that you did not prepare it with mkswap or that you have not done swapon or added it to your /etc/fstab file.

What cluster size does a FAT/NTFS partition use?

Environment settings set by a batch file are not working.
This is why FAT volumes larger than 511MB are not recommended due to the amount of potentially wasted space due to the 16KB and above cluster size. NTFS better balances the trade off between disk defragmentation due to smaller cluster size and wasted space due to a large cluster size.

What do I need to know to use fdisk(8) to resize the partition?

OCFS2 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
To grow a partition using fdisk(8), you will have to delete it and recreate it with a larger size. When recreating it, ensure you specify the same starting disk cylinder as before and a ending disk cylinder that is greater than the existing one. Otherwise, not only will the resize operation fail, but you may lose your entire file system. Backup your data before performing this task.

Do I have to have a MacOS partition?

Installation and Upgrade
No. If the partitioning software allows it, you can allocate all space on a drive to BSD partitions. Note, this drive will not show up on your desktop. Therefore you will need the booter either on a bootable floppy or on a MacOS partition on another drive.

What is a partition suit?

New York Real Estate Law
Partition is a legal term used to describe the division of a single property into multiple interests. If three bothers own an apartment house as joint tenants and they cannot get along, one of them may sue to partition the property into three separate interests. Once that is done, each person may sell his interest separately. Another result of a partition suit is that the property can be sold as part of the process and the proceeds divided between the separate owners.

I want to use my entire 2 Gig drive as the root partition. Why doesn't it work?

Section 0. (Basic FAQ information)
The easiest answer is the architecture of the machine has gotten you. Because of the limitations of the BIOS, everything the boot process needs must reside in the first 1023 cylinders on the disk. Most really big drives have more 'real' tracks than this, so DOS tries to translate the drive so it doesn't. The *BSD systems don't; they rely on the disk geometry being correct, or at least the same as the controller thinks it is. Once the system is up and running, the BIOS is disabled.

What's a bootstrap partition?

yaboot FAQ 0.3.3 - 05/07/2000
Please note: I've taken a few liberties with this explanation, and skipped over a few subtleties. This isn't exactly what happens, but it should be close enough to satisfy most people. If you'd like more detailed technical information, you're encouraged to search the various LinuxPPC lists for more information.
