During ancient times the Mississippi River would naturally overflow its banks in the springtime, providing new sediments and nutrients to the coastal area from 32 interior states and southern Canada. Over past centuries, a tremendous amount of suspended soil was deposited in the shallow Gulf of Mexico, eventually creating new land in south Louisiana.

Flooding effects that occur in the Rock River and in Lake Koshkonong can vary depending on amplitude and duration. The term “flood” has various technical definitions but in a normal sense means when the water level overtops the normal bank or shore elevation. This elevation varies from the upstream to downstream ends of the lake but for practical purposes is about a water elevation of 779 to 780 mean sea level.

Louisiana wetlands are unique and vital ecological assets. Wetlands act as a storm buffer against hurricanes and storms. They act as flood control devices: holding excess floodwaters during high rainfall (much like a sponge). Wetlands replenish aquifers, and they purify water by filtering out pollutants and absorbing nutrients. Wetlands provide habitat for a variety of wildlife.

On the Upper Mississippi River System, we have four federally-endangered mussels: the winged mapleleaf, the Higgins' eye, the fat pocketbook and the scaleshell. Also, each of the five States bordering the Upper Mississippi River have a list of species which are considered to be threatened, endangered or of special concern to them.

Stocked rainbow trout disappear from the streams more quickly than brown trout mainly because they are more vulnerable to angling pressure.  They are doing stream habitat improvement. It provides homes for larger-sized trout and helps to stabilize stream banks.

Bathymetric data is an essential tool scientists use to monitor the ecology of the river, and to assess the possible impact of hydrodynamic changes upon the riverine ecology.
