A large number of the items on our web site are originals. Unless a poster is specifically indicated as a "Reproduction", a "Poster Print" or a "Masterprint", then it is an original item. It will be quite close, and you probably would not be able to tell the difference by looking at it. The slight degradation is due to the MrSID format being slightly lossy.

Only an expert can tell, and even they are sometimes fooled. They look for paper condition and print quality, printer's marks and numbers, picture and paper size. An expert is usually familiar with the characteristics of known reprints, like off-colors or print method. Sometimes only a direct comparison with a undisputed original can tell.

It is our goal to achieve reproductions that are as close as possible to the original. Our artists have experience and expertise in the full spectrum of styles, ranging from traditional, renaissance, romantic and impressionist through to abstract and modern art. But remember these reproductions are hand-painted and some variation from the original is possible.

We do not "munge" the mail headers by inserting a "Reply-To: suse-linux-e@suse.com" because it makes it more difficult for the subscribers to handle the mail the way they want to. If someone wants to make a copy of a movie poster and they do their very best, it will be very difficult to identify the fake, especially in this day of digital reproduction and vastly improved (and accessible) printing equipment. But one fact remains: Most One-Sheets produced before 1980 were FOLDED. Beginning after 1980 ROLLED One-Sheets became available. If its pre-1980 the poster will most likely have folds.

A vintage original is a poster generally 50 years of age or older. Many of these posters were created using a printing technique known as stone lithography. Most were used much like billboards to market products and services including food, liquor, travel and entertainment.

With the rapidly improving printing technologies, that is becoming a real issue. If a good reproduction is in a frame and matted, you simply may not be able to tell. It might help to look at the litho under a magnifying glass. If it is not a really fine copy (such as those produced from the new ultra high technology) you might see that the poster lacks the distinctive pointillistic quality that goes with an original stone lithograph. Also, look at the condition of the paper.

Digital File : The most important element of giclee printing is the digital file. We scan your original work using a high resloution digital camera to create this digital file. Camera Scan : The digital camera directly captures the image creating a hi-resolution file. Traditionally, the image is captured on film and is then scanned. However, this latter process leads to a loss of color accuracy, detail and does introduce 'noise' from the emulsion on the film when enlarged.

We maintain that the person who does the needlework deserves the credit, so by all means sign (and date) your work. The girl who stitched the original sampler very likely copies parts of it from one of her classmates, siblings, or teachers, so it is not a totally original design. What is unique is your rendering of the pattern, so applaud yourself and record your name. Some people dislike altering the pattern by inserting their name.

Perhaps it could be compared to buying an original watercolor or a printed copy. Some people don't see the difference. Personally, I feel you cannot compare the beauty of an original painting to a poster. It's difficult to tell the difference unless you have both, hand painted tiles and reproduction, in front of you. It is like seeing two pictures in a book. One is the picture of the original art, and the other is the picture of a poster.

As we can actually print at sizes up to 1500mm x 15 metres it is unlikely that anyone could deal with the size of files generated following the same rules as used in traditional litho print.
