The number of credits completed determines your class standing in the College of Letters and Science. The Letters and Science requirements extend well beyond the minimum University requirements outlined in the General Education Requirements. Therefore, a student may have General Education requirements complete, but may have several Letters and Science requirements left to fulfill. Degree requirements vary depending upon when you began college for the first time.

A student becomes a sophomore by earning 45 credit hours; a junior by earning 90 credit hours; and a senior by earning 135 credit hours.

Class standing is not based on how many years you have been attending, but is based on number of credits you have COMPLETED. You are a freshman if you have completed less than 30 credits, a sophomore if you have 30-59 credits, a junior if you have 60-89 credits, and a senior if you have over 90 credits.

SPEA does not require a foreign language for either the BSPA or BSPH degrees. For BSES students, eight hours of a foreign language is required for degree completion.

All academic scholarship recipients are expected to maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA to renew their scholarship each year. Leadership scholarship recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA. Music scholarship recipients must achieve a 2.5 overall GPA and a 3.0 in their applied music field.

Majors (academic programs) in APEX are starting with Catalog Year FALL 2004 (i.e. UK Bulletin 2004-2005). If you are a sophomore, junior or senior, the courses required for your major might have changed and therefore your APEX audit would not be correct. We dissuade students from starting too early on SAT prep. Don't be fooled or persuaded into taking SAT prep too soon. The best thing to do is get good grades and take as challenging a curriculum as you can handle. In regard to the SAT read, read, and read. Answer: The Stony Brook ATP is structured so that the application process is completed during the spring semester of sophomore year, however a junior or senior-level student may apply when the required prerequisite coursework is completed.

It is imperative that high school juniors considering early admission are academically prepared for the challenges of college. Students must discuss their intent with their high school guidance counselor, receive written approval from the guidance counselor or high school principal, and receive satisfactory scores on ability-to-benefit testing. There is a formal process for students to be considered.

Due to the variety and intensity of the term, students are encouraged to complete the program during their junior or senior year. Exceptions will be made for younger students on the basis of their life experience, personal maturity, and academic record.
